25.9.2023 | Finland’s military participation in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) has ended and the remaining Finnish soldiers serving in the peacekeeping mission have returned home. The mission has supported the transitional authorities of Mali to create and maintain a safe operating environment to reconstruct their country.

1.12.2022 | On Thursday 1 December, the Government appointed Kirsi Henriksson (MA) to continue as Director of the Crisis Management Centre (CMC) Finland. The post will be filled for the period from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2027.

7.6.2022 | On Tuesday 7 June, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed issues related to international crisis management and agreed that Finland would prepare to increase its participation in NATO’s KFOR operation in Kosovo.

10.3.2023 | Consultation of civil society has become an established part of Finland’s preparations for the sessions of the UN Human Rights Council. The views of civil society support the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in its work to promote human rights. Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto discussed with a broad spectrum of the Finnish civil society members in February before the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council.

8.4.2022 | Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg on Monday 11 April 2022. The main topics on the agenda will be Russian aggression against Ukraine and the new European strategy ‘Global Gateway’.

26.8.2021 | In their meeting on Thursday 26 August 2021, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy agreed that Finland would increase its participation in the EU military crisis management training mission in Mali to some 20 soldiers in 2021 and to some 55 soldiers in 2022. In addition, the President and the Committee agreed that Finland would prepare to participate in the EU military crisis management training mission in Mozambique.

18.3.2022 | Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto will attend the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on 21 March. One of the main topics on the meeting agenda is Russian aggression against Ukraine. In their joint session, the foreign and defence ministers are also to adopt the Strategic Compass for security and defence cooperation in the EU. After the Foreign Affairs Council, Minister Haavisto will attend the opening session of the European Humanitarian Forum.

18.2.2022 | EU foreign ministers will convene in Brussels on 21 February. The main items on the meeting agenda are the European security situation, climate diplomacy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, preparation of the joint council of the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council, and the EU cyber exercise. The ministers will also hold an informal exchange with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. Under current affairs, the foreign ministers will briefly take stock of the situation in Mali.

20.1.2022 | EU foreign ministers will convene in Brussels on 24 January. The main items on the agenda are the security situation in Eastern Europe and the latest developments in Libya and Syria. The ministers will also discuss the EU Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the situation in Mali, Sudan and Kazakhstan. Later the same day, Foreign Minister Haavisto and Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Ann Linde will meet NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

21.5.2021 | On Friday 21 May 2021, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed issues relating to international crisis management. Finland currently has approximately 360 soldiers participating in ten military crisis management operations within the framework of the UN, the EU, NATO and the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.
