19.12.2025 | In a meeting that began on Thursday 18 December, the EU leaders reached an agreement on significant additional funding for Ukraine. In line with the agreement, the European Council will provide a EUR 90 billion loan to Ukraine for 2026 and 2027.

25.11.2025 | Finland does not meet the EU’s criteria for public deficit, according to the European Commission. The Commission is considering proposing that the EU open an excessive deficit procedure for Finland.

13.6.2025 | Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand and State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Marek Eštok will meet in Helsinki on Monday 16 June. Their discussions will focus on the current EU agenda and bilateral relations between the Slovak Republic and Finland.

7.2.2025 | Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will attend the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Action Summit in Paris on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 February at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron. President Macron has also invited EU leaders to a Summit of Heads of State and Government, and leaders from nearly 20 EU Member States are expected to attend alongside Finland.

31.1.2025 | Finland and the majority of the EU Member States have sent a joint letter calling on the European Investment Bank (EIB) to increase its financing for the European defence industry. The letter, drawn up at the initiative Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, is endorsed by France and Germany as well.

19.1.2024 | The European Commission published the conclusions of the assessment of the need for protection of the wolf population in December. The Commission proposes that the conservation status should be downgraded. Finland will bring this matter to the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on 23 January.

1.3.2023 | Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen and Slovakian State Secretary for European Affairs Andrej Stančík will meet in Helsinki on Thursday 2 March.

1.3.2023 | In a joint letter to the presidents of the European Commission and European Council, Finland and nine other EU Member States call for a long-term strategy to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and global influence. The countries hope that the European Council can adopt the strategy this spring. The European Council will discuss the European economy and competitiveness in its meeting at the end of March.

4.5.2023 | Ministers of sport from 36 countries have issued a fourth collective statement on the exclusion of Russia and Belarus from international sports.

30.9.2022 | At the presidential session on 30 September, the President of the Republic appointed three new non-resident Ambassadors.

3.6.2022 | On 3 June, Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen travelled to Bratislava, where she participated in the GLOBSEC 2022 Bratislava Forum, one of Europe’s leading conferences on security policy. The programme for her visit also included several high-level meetings.

10.2.2023 | The special meeting of the European Council held on 9 February discussed support for Ukraine, migration and measures to support the European economy and competitiveness. At the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to EU leaders to increase support for Ukraine and to intensify sanctions against Russia.

21.2.2023 | In their statement published on 20 February, the ministers of sport from 34 countries state that the International Olympic Committee should not change its decision of 28 February 2022 concerning the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international sports. According to the ministers, the situation in Ukraine has deteriorated over the past year.

2.6.2022 | Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen will visit Bratislava on Friday 3 June. The programme for her visit will include participating in the GLOBSEC 2022 Bratislava Forum and several high-level meetings.

1.11.2022 | The EU Ministers responsible for Sports, submitted a letter to the President of the International Olympic Committee Mr Thomas Bach, have expressed their concern about the deteriorating situation in Ukraine caused by the ongoing Russian war of aggression supported by Belarus. In the letter, the Ministers reiterated the requirement to exclude Russia and Belarus from all international sports activities.
