4.6.2026 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Luxembourg on 4 June for a meeting of the Home Affairs Council. The topics on the agenda include the temporary protection of people fleeing the war in Ukraine, EU cooperation with Somalia in promoting readmission, and the situation in the Middle East. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen.

29.5.2026 | At its meeting on 29 May, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed supporting Ukraine on the path to a just and lasting peace, strengthening the EU’s defence within the framework of the Permanent Structured Cooperation and promoting energy efficiency.

24.6.2025 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen met with Somalia's Minister of Internal Security Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail in Helsinki on 23 June. The meeting was a continuation of Minister Rantanen’s visit to Mogadishu earlier this year. Its purpose was to further strengthen relations between Finland and Somalia in the field of internal security and to agree on the next steps in cooperation on return issues.

22.1.2025 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen visited Somalia on 21 January. She met Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and Minister of Internal Security Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail. The purpose of the meetings was to strengthen bilateral relations between Finland and Somalia in the internal security sector, and to promote cooperation and exchange of best practices in return and readmission issues.

8.4.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior will allocate around EUR 44 million in EU funding to projects on border management, crime prevention and migration. The projects will improve the capabilities of security authorities, develop information systems, and secure resources for the authorities to manage migration. The funding will be granted from the EU Home Affairs Funds, under the autumn 2025 call for proposals.

3.10.2025 | At the presidential session on 3 October, the President of the Republic appointed non-resident Ambassadors to Uganda and Monaco.

25.8.2023 | The peace projects launched by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Iraq and Somalia have brought together people, and especially young people, who share an interest in the challenges facing the country and society, and in peace building. Millions of viewers have been reached through social media and television over the four years of projects.

7.4.2023 | Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto visited Mogadishu, Somalia, on 7 April. He met President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abshir Omar Jama, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Khadija M. Almakhzoumi and international actors in Somalia.

20.4.2023 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs will recover EUR 50,000 from Finn Church Aid because it has not been possible to verify that funds have been used in accordance with the government grant decision.

24.3.2023 | Superintendent Pekka Kokkonen, Head of the Police Dog Training Centre of the Police University College, has been appointed to serve as Senior Police Coordinator in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

31.1.2023 | The first Minister of the Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Republic of Somalia Khadija Mohamed Almakhzoumi visits Finland on 31 January–3 February 2023. The visit is on the invitation of the Finnish Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Maria Ohisalo. The purpose of the visit is to support the new ministry in starting its work.

3.2.2023 | Somalia’s first Minister of Environment and Climate Change Khadija Mohamed Almakhzoumi visited Finland this week on the invitation of Minister Maria Ohisalo.

22.4.2022 | International actors are focusing on life-saving measures in preparation for a conference on drought in the Horn of Africa arranged for 26 April. Half of the population of Somalia needs humanitarian support due to a drought affecting the entire country coupled with ongoing conflict.

5.12.2022 | Finland’s additional support will help the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) provide mobile health services, safe births and family planning for women who have been forced from their homes by the drought and food crisis in Somalia.

26.1.2023 | On 9 January, Director General Kauko Aaltomaa, who is on leave of absence from the Police Department of the Ministry of the Interior, took up his duties as Head of Mission of the European Union Capacity Building Mission in Somalia (EUCAP Somalia). EUCAP Somalia is a civilian crisis management mission under the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy. Its tasks include promoting maritime security in Somalia and supporting the building of the country’s police and judicial administrations.

24.9.2021 | On Friday 24 September, the President of the Republic decided to appoint one new non-resident ambassador.

22.6.2021 | Rowda Olad and Abdirizaq Ahmed share a common goal: they want to promote peace in Somalia. As part of a communication project in Somalia and funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, active youth, like Olad and Ahmed, tell about their work to promote peace development.

29.7.2022 | Member of the Parliament of Finland Suldaan Said Ahmed visited the Horn of Africa on 14-27 July. During his trip, Special Representative Said Ahmed visited Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia, including Mogadishu, as well as Hargeisa in Somaliland.

4.6.2026 | EU-ländernas inrikesministrar sammanträder i rådet för inrikes frågor i Luxemburg den 4 juni. Under mötet behandlas bland annat det tillfälliga skyddet för personer som flyr kriget i Ukraina, EU:s samarbete med Somalia bland annat för att främja återtagandet samt situationen i Mellanöstern. Finland representeras vid mötet av inrikesminister Mari Rantanen.

18.1.2024 | The budget reductions set out in the Government Programme will focus especially on region and country-specific development cooperation. The Country Programmes with Afghanistan, Kenya, Mozambique and Myanmar will be discontinued during the government term. Reductions will also be made in multilateral cooperation, humanitarian assistance and development policy loans and investments.
