29.4.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at the eighth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) to be held in the Armenian capital on Monday 4 May. The theme of the summit is Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe. Along with the heads of state or government of the countries involved in the EPC, representatives of EU institutions and the secretaries-general of NATO, the OSCE and the Council of Europe have been invited to the summit.

30.4.2026 | The European countries participating in Santa Marta express their strong support for the Santa Marta First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels and appreciate the leadership as shown by Colombia and the Netherlands. Santa Marta establishes an action-oriented platform to scale up work and to elevate energy transition. This is critical for addressing the climate emergency.

18.8.2025 | By decision of the Ministry of the Interior, Finland has sent a module for ground forest firefighting to Spain to help manage wildfires raging across the country. The module will be deployed in Spain for about a week.

16.3.2026 | The EU Environment Council will meet in Brussels on Tuesday 17 March. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting. Minister Multala stresses that now it is highly important to defend a consistent climate policy and, in particular, the emissions trading system.

12.3.2025 | Boosting assistance to Ukraine and strengthening European defence were key topics on the agenda when Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met for discussions in Helsinki on Wednesday 12 March. While in Helsinki, Prime Minister Sánchez also met with President of the Republic Alexander Stubb.

11.2.2026 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Finnish missions abroad provided consular services to approximately 245,000 customers in 2025. In addition, the Ministry’s 24/7 service was contacted around 6,700 times over the course of the year.

11.11.2025 | Finnish diplomat Rasmus Salminen participated in a further training programme for diplomats, organised by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The year-long training opened doors to global connections and provided fresh insights into international relations.

25.1.2026 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet in Brussels on Monday 26 January. The Council will discuss the European Democracy Shield, continue the rule of law dialogue and hear a presentation from the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU on the priorities of its programme. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the meeting.

19.12.2025 | The Finnish Government has made progress on its objective of doubling food exports by 2031. Business Finland’s foreign operations related to export promotion will be integrated into the structures of the Foreign Service, creating new opportunities to boost food exports through enhanced cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

2.12.2025 | Finland has ranked 8th in the Gender Equality Index for the European Union (EU). The Index measured gender equality in various domains, such as work, health and power. The data for the most recent Index is mainly from 2023 and 2024.

6.11.2023 | Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman will attend the Space Summit 2023 in Spain’s Seville on 6–7 November 2023. The event will bring together European space operators. An informal meeting of the EU Competitiveness Council, an informal ministerial meeting of the European Space Agency (ESA) and an informal joint meeting of the EU and ESA will be held in connection with the summit.

12.11.2025 | The Sports Ministers of 33 countries and the European Commission have expressed their grave concern about the decision of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in September to discontinue the partial suspensions of the National Paralympic Committees of Belarus and Russia from the Paralympic Games.

17.7.2025 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet in Brussels on Friday 18 July. At the meeting, the ministers will hold their first preliminary discussion on the EU’s next multiannual financial framework based on the proposal put forth by the Commission on Wednesday 16 July. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the meeting.

13.6.2025 | At the presidential session on 13 June, the President of the Republic appointed Counsellor for Foreign Affairs Jari Luoto to serve as Head of Mission at Finland’s Embassy in Madrid, starting on 1 September 2025.

30.6.2025 | The United Nations’ fourth International Conference on Financing for Development will take place in Seville, Spain, from 30 June to 3 July. The aim of the conference is to reform the international financial architecture for development cooperation and accelerate funding for sustainable development. Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will represent Finland at the conference.

10.3.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez will meet in Helsinki on Wednesday 12 March. Topics on the agenda for the meeting include improving the EU’s defence capabilities, digitalisation, the clean transition and bilateral relations between Finland and Spain.

28.2.2025 | Minna Kivimäki, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, will attend the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 3 and 4 March 2025, followed by a visit to Madrid to meet representatives of the Spanish administration on 5 March 2025.

26.1.2022 | Prime Minister Sanna Marin and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met in Madrid on Wednesday 26 January. The two prime ministers discussed strengthening their countries’ economic relations and cooperation on a number of EU issues. The security situation in Europe also came up in the discussion.

3.3.2025 | Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand and Spanish State Secretary for the European Union Fernando Mariano Sampedro Marcos will meet in Helsinki on Tuesday 4 March.

19.2.2025 | President of the Republic Alexander Stubb and Prime Minister Petteri Orpo participated remotely in a Ukraine meeting on Wednesday 19 February. French President Emmanuel Macron convened the high-level meeting to discuss Ukraine and European security.
