6.8.2026 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health proposes EUR 15.0 billion in appropriations for its Ministry and branch of government in 2027. This is about EUR 128 million more than in the 2026 Budget.

4.8.2026 | The draft national budget of the Minister of Finance for 2027 will implement policies agreed in the spring spending limits session. The budget proposal totals EUR 92.2 billion, envisioning a deficit of EUR 12.9 billion.

16.6.2022 | “Terrafame’s battery chemicals plant is a good example of how we are developing the Finnish mining and battery industry towards production of higher value added. Finland is introducing advanced processes and technologies and improving competences in a new area that will enable a responsible green transition,” Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä said at the opening of the plant in Sotkamo on 16 June 2022.

26.1.2021 | On 26 January 2021, the European Commission approved public support of EUR 2.9 billion proposed by 12 Member States to fund research and innovation projects in the battery sector. This public support is expected to generate private investments of EUR 9 billion. Finland will participate in the project and fund companies in the sector.

25.3.2021 | A national battery cooperation body will implement the Battery Strategy. The Strategy’s objective is to create a leading battery cluster in Finland by 2025, which will support Finland’s transition to a low-carbon economy. The cooperation body will bring together the different operators in the sector and promote the implementation of the Strategy’s objectives.

26.1.2021 | The electrification of society and the solutions offered by the battery industry will have a significant impact on how climate objectives can be achieved. The National Battery Strategy presents the means by which Finland will become a competitive, competent and sustainable player in the international battery industry. The Strategy is founded on the promotion of responsible battery production and electrification.

2.6.2026 | A parliamentary working group on defence, appointed by the Finnish Government, examined the need to develop and resource Finland’s homeland defence in the 2030s.

16.6.2026 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is requesting views on the proposal for a new chapter concerning offshore wind power construction and decommissioning to be added to the Water Act. Further provisions supplementing it would be included in the Government Decree on Water Resources Management.

22.9.2025 | The Government has submitted its proposal for the 2026 Budget and related legislative proposals to Parliament.

30.4.2026 | Economic recovery in Finland will be further delayed as a result of the crisis in the Middle East. The general government deficit will widen and remain large according to the Economic Forecast published by the Ministry of Finance on 30 April.

18.12.2025 | Finland’s economic recovery has been weaker than expected this year. The general government deficit is wide, and the debt ratio will continue to grow, estimates the Ministry of Finance in its economic forecast published on 18 December.

4.12.2025 | Finland is on the path to achieving the emission reduction targets for the effort-sharing sector for the period 2021–2030, set jointly in the EU. On 4 December 2025, the Government gave a Report to Parliament on the Medium-Term Climate Plan that sets out the measures to boost emission reductions.

13.6.2025 | Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will meet Prime Cabinet Secretary of Kenya Musalia Mudavadi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Benin Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica Arnoldo André Tinoco and Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand Russ Jalichandra in connection with the Kultaranta Talks on 16–17 June.

10.12.2025 | The wellbeing services county reform is progressing towards the set objectives throughout Finland, but there are still many issues left to address. This is according to a broad-based interim evaluation of the wellbeing services county reform made by an independent expert group.

12.3.2025 | A survey by We Foundation shows that groups for extracurricular activity organised by municipalities free of charge as part of the school day provide the majority of the participants with a safe space that is free of bullying, discrimination and racism. The results confirm that groups based on the Finnish model for leisure activities increase student wellbeing and are the only opportunity for many children and young people to have a hobby. The survey covers 20 municipalities of different sizes.

18.6.2025 | On Wednesday 18 June, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo held a parliamentary debate on strengthening Finland's debt sustainability. The debate has to do with the state of general government finances in Finland and the new fiscal rules.

17.3.2025 | Finland participates in an EU project that aims to set up a European Digital Infrastructure Consortium where the focus is on mobility and logistics. The Ministry of Transport and Communications will inform Parliament about the next steps and timetable towards the Consortium with a Europe communication on 17 March 2025. At the first stage Finland seeks an observer status in the Consortium proposed to be set up.
