4.7.2025 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a draft government proposal aiming to streamline the exchange of information between the police and other authorities. This proposal implements the objective outlined in the Government Programme to step up the combating of crime and remove obstacles to the related exchange of information. The deadline for submitting comments is August 17, 2025.

16.5.2023 | The Council of Europe has long been monitoring Russia’s alarming situation of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. For many years, the Council tried to exert influence over Russia by keeping the country as a Member and within the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). However, Russia launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 was the last straw, and the Council decided to expel Russia only three weeks later.

Finland's strong defence capability and resilience will strengthen the whole Alliance, says Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen in her speech at the Annual Meeting of Heads of Mission.

19.1.2023 | In 2022, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the missions abroad provided consular services to a total of approximately 256,000 customers. The demand for advisory services, in particular, continued to grow. During the year, the ministry’s 24/7 service received more than 8,000 contacts in total.

15.2.2022 | The second year of the pandemic was busy for the consular assistance services provided by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Finland's missions abroad, and the number of customers continued to increase. In 2021, the Ministry and the missions abroad provided consular services to a total of 255,000 customers.

25.5.2021 | The special meeting of the European Council, which started on Monday 24 May in Brussels, has strongly condemned the action taken by Belarus on Sunday. A Ryanair flight from Athens to Vilnius was forced to land in Minsk where opposition leader and journalist Raman Pratasevich was arrested. 

19.2.2021 | The EU foreign ministers will convene in Brussels on Monday 22 February. Finland’s representative at the meeting will be Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto. The ministers will exchange views on Russia, the Strategic Compass for EU security and defence policy, and Hong Kong. Foreign Minister Haavisto will give a report on his visit to Ethiopia and Sudan as Special Envoy of the European Union.

19.5.2021 | Human rights defenders play an important role in strengthening democracy-building and in supporting sustainable development. At the same time, however, human rights defenders continue to be subjected to sanctions, which are getting even tighter. The shrinking space of civil society and restrictions on freedom of expression threaten the position of human rights defenders. At an event in April, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto exchanged views with women human rights defenders (WHRDs).

19.8.2020 | At their video meeting on 19 August, the members of the European Council expressed their strong support for peaceful democratic development in Belarus. The EU leaders urged the Belarusian government to engage in genuine political dialogue with the opposition in order to deescalate the situation. Prime Minister Sanna Marin represented Finland at the meeting.

1.4.2026 | Metsäisten EU-jäsenvaltioiden For Forest+ -ryhmä on jälleen vahvistunut, kun Saksa liittyi mukaan Ruotsissa 31.3.−1.4.2026 pidetyssä kokouksessa. Ministerit keskustelivat mm. EU:n metsäkato- ja LULUCF-asetuksista, lintudirektiivistä sekä metsien kestävän hoidon ja käytön kriteerien ja indikaattoreiden kehittämisestä.

30.3.2026 | Jord- och skogsbruksminister Sari Essayah deltar i de skogsrika EU-ländernas (For Forest+) möte i Sverige den 31 mars–1 april 2026. Under mötet diskuteras aktuella EU-frågor samt hållbar skötsel och användning av skog. I dag deltar ministern i jordbruks- och fiskerådets möte i Bryssel.
