4.12.2025 | The economy of wellbeing offers tools for policy makers to secure the preconditions for a good life both for the current population and future generations. A new working paper by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) analyses how wellbeing economy practices have been integrated into decision-making in ten countries. This comparison will also help Finland create its own governance model.

19.12.2024 | On 19 December 2024, the Government adopted a strategy and an action plan for tackling the shadow economy and economic crime for 2024–2027. During the new programming period, operating conditions of the authorities will be enhanced and their cooperation intensified.

21.5.2024 | In 2020–2023, more than 50 projects tackling the shadow economy and economic crime were carried out in Finland. They succeeded in preventing abuses, promoting healthy competition between companies and supporting a fair labour market by improving the transparency and openness of business activities, for example.

According to a study published on 26 April, short-term shocks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, have required the active involvement of states to ensure the sustainability of their economies and societies.

11.6.2020 | On 11 June 2020, the Government adopted a strategy and an action plan for tackling the grey economy and economic crime for 2020–2023. The tackling of the grey economy will focus on prevention, more effective access to information and cooperation between authorities.

10.1.2020 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has appointed a steering group on combating the grey economy. The group will be chaired by the Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen.

1.3.2021 | On 1 March, the management of Metsä Group and leaders of key trade unions met under the leadership of Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen to discuss the start of construction of the bioproduct plant in Kemi. Metsä Group has stated that it will require companies operating at the construction site to comply with Finnish legislation and collective agreements throughout the subcontracting chain. In addition, the company will immediately address any shortcomings discovered.

25.1.2021 | In its spring 2021 budget session, the Government will discuss possible plans to expand the tax credit for household expenses. However, a new study shows that the tax credit is not an effective means to increase employment or prevent tax evasion.

31.12.2025 | Fellow citizens, The darkest part of winter is now behind us – every day is a little bit longer than the last. Winter storm Hannes, which raged through Finland, has now subsided. I would like to thank the authorities and everyone else who has worked hard to repair the damage caused by the storm. We can be proud of the way Finland comes together in these situations.

22.9.2025 | A total of EUR 238.8 million in appropriations is proposed for the main title of the Prime Minister’s Office. The draft budget appropriations cover the operating expenses of both the Prime Minister’s Office and the Office of the Chancellor of Justice, the salary expenses of ministers, state secretaries and special advisers, as well as subsidies to political parties, among other things.

13.11.2025 | In its meeting on 13 November, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions on the European Commission’s proposal for the multiannual financial framework, which will serve as the Union’s long-term budget for 2028–2034. The ministerial committee on also outlined Finland’s positions three council meetings to be held next week.

28.1.2026 | On 28 January 2026, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published an interim review of the project on security and new economic growth from communication networks, known as the TUUTTI project. The review outlines the project’s progress and presents the key findings to date.

23.10.2024 | The first national risk assessment of money laundering and terrorist financing for non-profit organisations (NPOs) has been completed. In addition to the assessment of risks, it is aimed at increasing awareness of the Finnish NPO sector among obliged entities specified in the Act on Preventing Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, supervisory authorities as well as operators in the sector itself.

10.10.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior is requesting comments on a draft proposal for amending the Act on the Bank and Payment Account Monitoring System. The consultation round ends on 21 November 2024.

2.9.2025 | The Government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has reached a decision on its budget proposal for 2026. The Government’s decisions aim to support economic growth, which is picking up. Supporting economic growth and continuing responsible fiscal management is necessary to ensure the security of people in Finland and safeguard their access to important services going forward.

25.6.2025 | In its meeting on Wednesday 25 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for June European Council to be held on 26–27 June in Brussels. The ministerial committee also discussed preparations for the EU’s next multiannual financial framework.
