12.5.2026 | The Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy has decided that the review of government agency structures will continue with follow-up studies on potential longer-term changes. The follow-up studies will be completed before the end of this year.

25.1.2026 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet in Brussels on Monday 26 January. The Council will discuss the European Democracy Shield, continue the rule of law dialogue and hear a presentation from the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU on the priorities of its programme. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the meeting.

18.3.2026 | In its meeting on Wednesday 18 March, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the European Council meeting on 19–20 March and the Euro Summit to be held in connection with it. The ministerial committee also discussed the agenda for the next meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, which will focus on trade.

7.10.2025 | In its meeting on Tuesday 7 October, the Government discussed a preliminary study completed by the Ministry of Justice that will serve as a basis for a parliamentary assessment of the effects of NATO membership on the division of powers between state bodies.

14.11.2025 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet in Brussels on Monday 17 November. The main themes of the meeting will be the EU’s next multiannual financial framework, the annual rule of law dialogue and preparations for the December European Council. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the meeting.

22.1.2026 | In its meeting on Thursday 22 January, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed the informal European Council, economic support for Ukraine and military mobility.

23.6.2025 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet in Luxembourg on Tuesday 24 June to prepare for the June European Council. The ministers will also continue their annual rule of law dialogue with a country-specific discussion on the rule of law situation in Finland. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the meeting.

13.11.2025 | On Thursday 13 November 2025, the Government appointed a parliamentary working group that will assess and, if necessary, put forth justified proposals for developing practices or legislation concerning NATO matters. The work will be based on an assignment from the Constitutional Law Committee and a preliminary study completed by the Ministry of Justice in October 2025.

20.11.2025 | On 16 July, the European Commission presented a proposal for a new Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028–2034. The proposal would significantly increase EU funding for home affairs. The Government informed Parliament of the proposal by submitting a Union communication on 20 November.

15.7.2025 | The Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met for its 134th session in London on 7–11 July 2025. Finland has been a member of the Council during the current term 2024–2025.

30.6.2025 | On 30 June, Finland brought an action against the European Commission before the Court of Justice of the European Union. In its action, Finland calls on the Court of Justice to repeal Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/864, which reduced the Atlantic salmon fishing quota allocated to Finland in 2025 due to overfishing in 2024.

24.10.2023 | The 2023 Elisabeth Haub Award for Environmental Law and Diplomacy has been jointly awarded to Ambassador Marja Lehto of Finland and former Ambassador Marie Jacobsson of Sweden for their pivotal roles advancing environmental law and policy to protect the environment in times of armed conflicts. An award ceremony and panel discussion with both Laureates was held in New York on Monday, October 23, 2023.

25.8.2025 | "Finland is advancing the interests of Finland and Finnish businesses in a proactive and forward-looking way, also in the midst of ongoing changes."

17.7.2025 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet in Brussels on Friday 18 July. At the meeting, the ministers will hold their first preliminary discussion on the EU’s next multiannual financial framework based on the proposal put forth by the Commission on Wednesday 16 July. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the meeting.

2.1.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is requesting comments on a draft government proposal on legislation to supplement the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). The deadline for submitting comments is 14 February 2025.

10.10.2022 | The international system would not function without international law. The International Law Commission is one of the UN's oldest special bodies, where a large part of the legal regulation for international relations has been prepared. The Commission's work has been of great importance in promoting the rule of law and justice internationally.

4.7.2025 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a draft government proposal aiming to streamline the exchange of information between the police and other authorities. This proposal implements the objective outlined in the Government Programme to step up the combating of crime and remove obstacles to the related exchange of information. The deadline for submitting comments is August 17, 2025.

24.2.2025 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet on Tuesday 25 February in Brussels. Ministers will exchange views on the European Commission’s annual work programme and start preparations for the European Council in March. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the meeting.

19.3.2025 | At its meeting on Wednesday 19 March, the Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the March European Council and Euro Summit (20–21 March) and on the EU High Representative’s proposal for increasing military support to Ukraine, which will be discussed at the European Council.
