5.3.2024 | On 4 March 2023, the EU Member States, European Parliament and Commission reached a provisional political agreement on a proposal for a regulation on packaging and packaging waste. Finland has taken an active part in the preparation of the regulation. The proposal that was agreed on can be evaluated in further detail only after its final content is available. The proposal is still pending formal adoption by the Member States and Parliament.

12.12.2019 | Starting in the beginning of 2020, the Member States of the European Union will have to report their food waste to the European Commission. At the Time's up for food waste conference held in Brussels on 12 December, the Commission will issue its recommendations on reducing food losses and food waste. The event is part of the official programme of Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

9.3.2026 | Finnish consumers are increasingly ordering low-cost goods online, mostly from manufacturers based in China. Based on the proposals of a recent report, the Government will begin to prepare legislation to address problems caused by these cheap imports. There is also emphasis on consumer responsibility.

1.3.2022 | The food industry has renewed its commitment to materials efficiency to promote more sustainable food production, distribution and consumption in 2022–2026. The Finnish Food and Drink Industries’ Federation, the Finnish Grocery Trade Association and the Finnish Hospitality Association MaRa have signed the commitment together with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of the Environment.

4.3.2021 | On 4 March 2021 more than 100 people participated in a webinar to boost Finland’s preparations for the UN Food Systems Summit FSS in September 2021. The webinar was organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In his address to the webinar David Nabarro, the leader of the global FSS Dialogues process, noted that Finland has taken an active lead in reforming the world’s food system to make it more sustainable and equitable.

24.6.2021 | On Thursday 25 June, Finland hosted a meeting of the Nordic ministers of agriculture. Finland holds the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2021. The meeting was held via video conferencing, and it was chaired by Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Jari Leppä. The theme of the ministers’ policy discussion was the sustainable Nordic food systems.

30.7.2021 | The UN Food Systems Summit will be held at the level of heads of state or government in connection with the UN General Assembly in September. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Jari Leppä and Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari represented Finland at the ministerial level Pre-Summit in Rome on 26–28 July.

20.5.2020 | The Farm to Fork Strategy published by the European Commission on 20 May 2020 aims for an even fairer, healthier and more environmentally-friendly European food system. As shown by its title, the comprehensive strategy covers the whole food chain from primary production to consumption, and it should also serve as a model for developing a more sustainable global food system.
