21.3.2025 | On 20 March, Finland received notice that the European Commission has referred Finland to the Court of Justice of the European Union. The Commission’s application concerns the delay in transposing Directive (EU) 2021/2167 on credit servicers and credit purchasers, which aims to address the issue of non-performing loans (the ‘NPL Directive’).

4.12.2025 | The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of the Environment have begun legislative drafting to ensure consistent and predictable application of the obligations under the Birds Directive. The need to amend the Forest Act and the Nature Conservation Act stems from a judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union on felling trees during the period of bird breeding and rearing.

18.12.2025 | A working group proposes that the Arbitration Act be reformed by replacing it with a new act. The objective is, in accordance with the Government Programme, to improve the competitiveness of arbitration in Finland and make the act correspond to the best international practices.

2.9.2025 | The Government of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has reached a decision on its budget proposal for 2026. The Government’s decisions aim to support economic growth, which is picking up. Supporting economic growth and continuing responsible fiscal management is necessary to ensure the security of people in Finland and safeguard their access to important services going forward.

8.12.2022 | Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson will travel to South Africa to attend an international conference in Pretoria on 7–8 February 2023. After that, the Minister will visit Namibia.

16.11.2023 | The Government has set up a project to implement the equality statement submitted to Parliament earlier this year. The statement contains a number of measures to promote equality and combat racism in Finnish society. Many of them are based on the Government Programme, but the statement also includes new measures. A more detailed action plan for the project will be drawn up in spring 2024.

The International Law Commission is one of the UN's oldest special bodies, where a large part of the legal regulation for international relations has been prepared. The Commission's work has been of great importance in promoting the rule of law and justice internationally.

13.6.2025 | The home affairs ministers from all the EU Member States are meeting for the Justice and Home Affairs Council of 13 June in Luxembourg. The agenda includes the continuation of temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine, the EU Internal Security Strategy as well as the return of persons staying illegally in the EU. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen.
