18.12.2025 | The Government will address the difficulties of foreign students and their families. On 18 December 2025, the ministerial working group on internal security and administration of justice outlined legislative changes regarding requirements for student livelihood and language skills.

7.3.2024 | On 7 March 2024, the Finnish Government submitted to Parliament a proposal concerning the implementation of the amendments made to the guidelines of the Maritime Labour Convention of the International Labour Organization in 2022. The proposal would adopt the amendments and bring them into force at the national level.

14.11.2025 | The President of the Republic has granted the annual internationalisation awards to three companies and one community. Orion Corporation won the 2025 Growth Company Award. The Newcomer Company Award went to Sensofusion, and Sandvik Mining and Construction was recognised as the Long-term International Investor. The year’s Community Award was granted to the Finnish Startup Community.

8.3.2024 | Minister of Employment Arto Satonen will represent Finland at the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on 11 March. The Platform Work Directive, which has been in preparation for a long time, will be the only legislative matter in the Council. 8.4.2020 | The Government proposes amendments to the Seafarers’ Employment Contracts Act that would ensure the continuation of the employee’s employment relationship and salary payment in a situation where the employee is imprisoned as a result of piracy or armed robbery against the ship.

12.1.2023 | The Commission will have extensive powers to investigate the effects of subsidies from third countries on the internal market. In addition, the Commission must be notified in advance of major acquisitions and public procurement contracts. The aim is to ensure a level playing field for companies in the EU’s internal market. The regulation entered into force on 12 January 2023 and its application will begin in stages. 

29.11.2024 | The EU’s Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council will meet in Brussels on 2 December 2024. Minister of Employment Arto Satonen will represent Finland at the meeting.

23.11.2022 | The Ministerial Council of the European Space Agency (ESA) was held in Paris on 22–23 November 2022. At the Ministerial Council, which is organised every three years, the Member States decide on the priorities, programmes and funding of ESA’s activities for the coming years.

18.2.2020 | By December 2019, 869 of the 2,211 immigrants who participated in the integration SIB (Social Impact Bond) experiment had been employed. The experiment is estimated to employ approximately 1,000–1,200 people in total.

7.2.2024 | The Ministry of Education and Culture will allocate EUR 255 million to universities for piloting new practices in doctoral education in 2024–2027. 1.7.2020 | A number of acts concerning maritime labour will be amended on 1 July 2020. The amendments concern the complaint procedure on board the ship, working time and rest periods, among others. They are based on provisions issued by the Maritime Labour Convention of the International Labour Organization ILO.

3.12.2020 | Provisions have been added to the regulations of the International Labour Organization’s Maritime Labour Convention concerning a situation where a seafarer is detained as a result of piracy or an armed robbery against the ship. The purpose of the provisions is to ensure the continuity of seafarers’ employment contracts and salary payments in such situations.

3.6.2020 | Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the demand for personal protective equipment for health and social services personnel is still high everywhere in the world. The start of domestic production will ease the situation in Finland.
