20.10.2025 | A decision to phase out imports of Russian natural gas into the European Union was taken today, 20 October, at the meeting of EU energy ministers in Luxembourg. The regulation proposal approved by the Member States is a key step in the EU’s efforts to end its dependence on Russian fossil energy.

17.10.2025 | EU energy ministers will meet in Luxembourg on 20 October 2025. In the meeting, the aim is to approve the Council's general approach on the RePowerEU regulation to gradually phase out natural gas imports from Russia. The other main item on the agenda is to discuss the role of electrification as a driver of the EU’s competitive and clean transition. 20.5.2022 | On 20 May 2022, Gazprom Export informed the energy company Gasum Oy that natural gas deliveries to Finland under Gasum’s supply contract will be cut on 21 May 2022 at 7.00 am. The reason for the cut is that Finland has not agreed to pay in rubles for pipeline gas supplies. 

20.5.2022 | Gasgrid Finland Oy and US-based Excelerate Energy, Inc. signed a ten-year lease agreement for the LNG terminal ship Exemplar on 20 May 2022. The vessel will safeguard Finland’s security of supply and help Finland meet its gas needs in the event that imports of Russian pipeline gas are shut down.

17.3.2022 | On 17 March 2022, the Government issued a decree on infrastructure support for the use of electricity, biogas and renewable hydrogen in transport between 2022 and 2025. The aim is to promote the use of these alternative fuels in road transport by supporting investments in the charging and gas refuelling network.

13.6.2025 | The EU’s energy ministers will meet in Luxembourg on 16 June 2025 to discuss the roadmap towards ending Russian energy imports and to approve conclusions on strengthening the energy union by reinforcing energy security. Finland will be represented by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

11.10.2024 | The EU energy ministers will convene in Luxembourg on 15 October 2024 for the official Energy Council under the Hungarian Presidency. There are no decisions on the agenda of the meeting. The ministers will discuss follow-up measures to the recommendations of Draghi’s competitiveness report, preparedness for the upcoming winter season and divergence in wholesale electricity prices.

The ministers will also discuss the future of the REPowerEU plan and the status of the Green Deal. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen.

That share was reduced almost to zero in a few months, and the energy war launched by Russia increased consumer prices remarkably. As the energy markets have changed, it is the time to look how Russian energy was replaced and what more permanent effects trade changes will have.
