24.4.2026 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London from 27 April to 1 May 2026. IMO Member States are expected to decide the next steps in negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. Other topics to be discussed include specifications to the rules on the carbon intensity and energy efficiency of vessels, the regulation of ballast water and guidance on reducing underwater noise.

14.12.2022 | The joint declaration signed in Turku on 13 December 2022 will help develop sustainable shipping and shipbuilding and strengthen the Finnish maritime cluster.

3.3.2022 | On 3 March, the Government adopted a decision on the action plan for Finland’s maritime policy. The plan includes 44 concrete measures for all maritime sectors. The action plan places particular emphasis on protection of the seas, the maritime cluster and marine production.

27.2.2024 | Secretary-General of International Maritime Organization Arsenio Antonio Domínguez Velasco will visit Finland from 27 February to 2 March 2024. Secretary-General Domínguez will meet Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications Minna Kivimäki and Director General of the Transport and Communications Agency Traficom Jarkko Saarimäki.

24.11.2022 | A forum for sustainable maritime trade, convened by Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka and Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä, will take place on 24 November 2022. The forum aims to generate discussion on the challenges and opportunities of the green transition in maritime logistics for Finland.

11.5.2022 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has launched a development programme for sustainable maritime industry. The starting point for the programme work is maintaining Finland’s maritime industry as a competitive employer in the country’s different regions. Climate objectives and digitalisation will create new demand and business opportunities as long as the sector invests heavily in competence and innovation, productivity, internationality, exports and cooperation.

16.6.2021 | The Prime Minister’s Office sent a draft of its action plan for maritime policy for a broad round of consultations on 16 June 2021. The purpose of the action plan is to develop and coordinate Finland’s maritime policy and to implement the maritime policy objectives set in the Government Programme.

16.2.2026 | Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen is currently visiting Canada and the United States. The visit is part of Finland’s long-term goal to intensify strategic cooperation and collaboration on skills and expertise with North America. Another purpose is to find sustainable solutions for the development, availability and opportunities for skilled labour in the marine industry together with partner countries.

23.5.2023 | Permanent Secretary Minna Kivimäki will visit London to promote campaigns which seek a place for Finland at the heart of the International Maritime Organization, IMO. 

29.6.2022 | The UN Ocean Conference, which will be held for the second time, brings together representatives of states, researchers, civil society, and businesses to discuss the oceans’ role in climate change mitigation as well as the future of a sustainable blue economy.

11.7.2024 | On 11 July 2024, Finland, the United States and Canada published a trilateral declaration concerning cooperation in the production of icebreakers (ICE). The initiative was signed by the Presidents of Finland and the United States Alexander Stubb and Joe Biden and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau.

30.6.2022 | The United Nations Ocean Conference was held in Lisbon from 27 June to 1 July 2022. At the Conference, states pledged to contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially that concerning life below water. Finland’s delegation was led by Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä. State Secretary Terhi Lehtonen and Permanent Secretary Juhani Damski attended the Conference as well.

10.11.2021 | Finland participates in six transport initiatives adopted at the Glasgow Climate Change Conference. Countries make commitments to reduce emissions on the road, at sea and in the air. Most of these declarations were published on the Transport Day on 10 November 2021.

21.5.2021 | On 17 May, the European Commission published a communication on promoting a sustainable blue economy in the EU. The Communication sets out a detailed agenda for the blue economy. A sustainable blue economy is a fundamental part of the broader European Green Deal, which is indispensable for the future of Europe. Sustainable blue economy is not possible without clean and healthy oceans and seas.
