12.8.2025 | The Siikajoki Vapaaksi environmental association is set to restore the Pöyrynkoski rapids, enabling the free ascent of migratory fish in the river. The project was formally launched on Tuesday 12 August at Revonlahti School in Siikajoki, North Ostrobothnia. Formally conveying favourable greetings to the event, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah noted that the project was a superb example of a remediation exercise promoted by local parties and prepared in broad partnership.

The plan specifies how Finland aims to implement the EU Nature Restoration Regulation and improve the state of nature in the years to come. The draft should be ready to be submitted to the European Commission in the autumn. The Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry request for views on the draft plan by 27 August 2026 at the latest.

6.3.2026 | In 2025, about 6,600 hectares of forest habitats were protected under the Forest Biodiversity Programme for Southern Finland METSO. Last year Finnish forest owners protected permanently about 3,200 hectares of forest and concluded ten-year environmental forestry subsidy agreements concerning about 3,400 hectares. The area covered by nature management works was about 180 hectares.

30.11.2021 | Under the migratory fish programme NOUSU led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the State of Finland contributes to the restoration of the Virtaankoski Rapid in the River Tainionvirta that discharges into Päijänne, the second largest lake in Finland. The regulating dam of the small-scale hydropower plant will be demolished to free the river. The company that owns the power plant will be transferred to Hiitolanjoki Voima Oy at the beginning of 2022.

31.8.2021 | Funding is now being collected to purchase the Myllykoski hydropower plant in Kuusamo. The idea is to demolish the plant so that threatened lake trout will be able to migrate freely to large areas of streams and lakes. A binding preliminary agreement was signed and the first deposit paid to Koskienergia Koskivoima Oy on 31 August. The project receives support from the migratory fish programme NOUSU of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

20.8.2024 | In October 2023, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed a working group to examine ways to improve Finland’s competitive position in offshore wind power production compared with other Baltic Sea countries and to promote other targets on offshore wind power set out in the Government Programme. The proposals included in the report published by the working group on 20 August 2024 form an action plan for the promotion of offshore wind power.

4.3.2021 | The Myllykoski hydropower plant will cease operating on Kuusamo’s River Kuusinkijoki, allowing threatened brown trout free access to extensive watercourse and lake areas. A binding letter of intent was signed in Helsinki on 4 March 2021. The power plant has been the only dam structure of the large catchment area. Koskienergia Koskivoima Oy will sell its power plant to the Kuusinkijoki kuntoon ry.

23.6.2021 | At a meeting on Wednesday, 23 June, the Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs outlined the positions of Finland ahead of the European Council meeting to be held in Brussels on 24 and 25 June, and for the Euro Summit due on 25 June. The European Council will discuss the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, migration, Turkey, Russia and Belarus.
