Russia’s ruthless strikes on civilian targets highlight the need to tighten sanctions. With its 20th sanctions package, the European Union continues to increase pressure on Russia to weaken the country’s ability to pursue its war of aggression against Ukraine.

20.5.2022 | On 20 May 2022, Gazprom Export informed the energy company Gasum Oy that natural gas deliveries to Finland under Gasum’s supply contract will be cut on 21 May 2022 at 7.00 am. The reason for the cut is that Finland has not agreed to pay in rubles for pipeline gas supplies.

20.5.2022 | Gasgrid Finland Oy and US-based Excelerate Energy, Inc. signed a ten-year lease agreement for the LNG terminal ship Exemplar on 20 May 2022. The vessel will safeguard Finland’s security of supply and help Finland meet its gas needs in the event that imports of Russian pipeline gas are shut down.

21.2.2019 | The interconnected natural gas markets of Finland, Estonia and Latvia will open to competition in early 2020 once the Balticconnector pipeline connecting the Finnish and Estonian gas networks is up and running. The Government proposes that the amendments to the Natural Gas Market Act enabling this reform be ratified at the presidential session on 22 February 2019.

18.12.2025 | Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala and Estonia’s Minister of Energy and the Environment Anders Sutt discussed future opportunities for Finnish-Estonian energy cooperation in Helsinki on 18 December 2025. The countries have so far had successful collaboration on developing the transmission networks for electricity and gas, protecting critical infrastructure and creating a common electricity market.

19.12.2019 | From the beginning of 2020, the Natural Gas Market Act will open up the natural gas and renewable gases retail market to competition. At the same time, the retail gas market is taking steps to introduce a centralised information exchange system, a data hub, for natural gas trading. Although the energy crisis has largely been overcome, geopolitical uncertainty continues and strong investments in military and civilian security are necessary. The political situation in many Member States is unstable, including Germany and France.

12.3.2025 | The last projects of the Catch the Carbon package of climate measures ended at the end of 2024. The implementation of the knowledge and climate change resilient solutions produced in the package of 180 measures will continue and be further intensified through cooperation in different parts of the country. The processes to support this include the activities of the National Climate Unit of the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres).

Humanity, however, is still in its infancy in harnessing fusion nuclear power as an energy source, so the role of hydrogen on Earth is different - at least for the moment. Traditionally, it already works as a raw material for many industrial processes, for example oil refining. A new, climate-based need is to utilize clean hydrogen in industrial processes that replace fossil-based production.
