12.5.2022 | The Government has submitted a proposal to Parliament on reducing the maximum waiting times for access to care. The proposal would shorten the maximum waiting times for access to primary healthcare under the Health Care Act. The maximum waiting time guarantee would apply to both physical and mental health problems.

22.12.2025 | The timing and content of health checks at child health clinics and schools, and in student healthcare and oral healthcare will be regulated in future by government decree. Upper secondary level student health checks and preliminary health examinations for compulsory military service will be combined, and an electronic health questionnaire will be introduced.

Under the proposal, the timing and content of health checks in child health clinics, school and student healthcare, and oral healthcare would in future be regulated in a government decree instead of an act. The health check in student healthcare at upper secondary level would be combined with the pre-conscription health examination, and an electronic health questionnaire would be introduced.

This is about EUR 475 million less than in the 2025 Budget. The funding of wellbeing services counties is not included in the appropriations for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and its branch of government. Instead, it falls under the main title of the Ministry of Finance.

14.7.2023 | Starting on 1 September 2023, non-urgent care in primary health care must be provided to people more quickly. The maximum waiting time for outpatient care will be shortened from three months to 14 days, and the maximum waiting time for oral health care from six months to four months.

15.2.2021 | Labour shortage in the health and social services sector is already high and likely to grow in the future. It is therefore very important to increase the attractiveness of the sector and improve working conditions. The role of the private sector as an employer must also be recognised better. 

26.3.2021 | In February–March 2021, the Employment and Economic Development Offices (TE Offices) defined 37 occupations as shortage occupations nationwide. A year ago, before the effects of the coronavirus epidemic started to show, there were 60 such occupations. In the autumn of 2020, 31 of the estimated 200 occupations suffered from labour shortage. In other words, the number of shortage occupations has risen slightly from the assessment in the autumn.
