29.2.2024 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health is asking for opinions on a proposal that the National Archives of Finland could make a screening decision on the permanent retention of public healthcare patient information.

17.11.2022 | The Government proposes that a new act be enacted on patient ombudspersons and social services ombudspersons. The act would lay down provisions on the organisation of the activities of patient ombudspersons and social services ombudspersons and their independence, qualifications and duties. The act would also include provisions on the processing of personal data.

21.12.2022 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has published a guide on how to apply the Decree on the Rights of Access to Client Data in Healthcare and Social Welfare.

13.4.2023 | The regulation concerning the processing of client data in healthcare and social welfare will be reformed. The Government submitted the relevant bills for approval on Thursday 13 April. The President of the Republic is to approve them on Friday 14 April.

27.10.2022 | The Government proposes to reform the regulation on the processing of client data in healthcare and social welfare and to enact a new Act on the Electronic Processing of Client Data in Healthcare and Social Welfare for this purpose.

20.12.2022 | From 1 January 2023 onwards, the wellbeing services counties must provide necessary non-urgent healthcare services for undocumented persons and persons whose status resembles that of an undocumented person. 

14.11.2022 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, together with the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, will organise an information session on the content of the Decree on the Rights of Access to Client Data in Healthcare and Social Welfare and the related application guide on 19 December 2022 at 13.00–15.00.

20.12.2022 | The President of the Republic has approved the amendments to the Abortion Act. In future, a pregnancy may be terminated solely based on the pregnant woman’s request until the end of the twelfth week of pregnancy. In the 1970 Act, an opinion by two doctors was required in most cases for the termination of pregnancy, and grounds had to be presented.

8.2.2021 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has launched a project programme to reform the legislation governing social and health care information management.

26.8.2021 | The new Act on the Electronic Processing of Client Data in Healthcare and Social Welfare has been adopted. The Act will enter into force on 1 November 2021. The new Act will repeal the current Act on the Electronic Processing of Client Data in Healthcare and Social Welfare. At the same time, the Act on Electronic Prescriptions and certain other Acts will also be amended.

15.7.2021 | The President of the Republic has approved the Acts supplementing the EU regulations on medical devices. The Acts will enter into force on 19 July 2021.

19.5.2021 | Finland’s digital COVID-19 vaccination certificate will be available in the My Kanta pages as of 26 May. However, not all users will able to view their vaccination certificate on the launch date.

31.12.2021 | During the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have experienced both light and darkness. A year ago we were able to start vaccinations, which have given us protection and security. That said, the virus is unpredictable, and the pandemic is unfortunately not over yet.

19.1.2023 | In 2022, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the missions abroad provided consular services to a total of approximately 256,000 customers. The demand for advisory services, in particular, continued to grow. During the year, the ministry’s 24/7 service received more than 8,000 contacts in total.

15.9.2022 | The Government proposes amendments to the Act on Cross-Border Health Care. The most central amendments deal with renewing the right to reimbursement under the Directive on the Application of Patients’ Rights in Cross-border Healthcare.
