22.8.2023 | Changes in working life challenge OSH enforcement. In addition to the prevention of accidents, occupational diseases and other health hazards caused by work, OSH enforcement plays an increasingly important role in ensuring a fair working life.

7.3.2024 | On Thursday 7 March 2024, the Government appointed Taneli Puumalainen as Director General of the Department for Safety, Security and Health at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The appointment is for a fixed term until 30 April 2027.

2.3.2023 | The Act on Occupational Safety and Health Enforcement and Cooperation on Occupational Safety and Health at Workplaces will be amended to improve the enforcement of the provisions on wage dumping and the monitoring of issues affecting indoor air quality. The powers of the occupational safety and health (OSH) authorities to enforce the provisions on wage dumping will be extended, and in future, the OSH authorities will be obliged to notify other authorities of problems with indoor air quality.

17.11.2022 | The Government proposes amendments to the Act on Occupational Safety and Health Enforcement and Cooperation on Occupational Safety and Health at Workplaces (Act on Occupational Safety and Health). The proposal would extend the occupational safety and health (OHS) authorities’ powers concerning the enforcement of provisions on wage dumping. The OSH authorities would also have new duties concerning the notification of other authorities of problems with indoor air quality.

2.7.2025 | About 2,600 wild-berry pickers were granted a seasonal work visa for Finland for summer 2025. About 60 applicants received a negative decision.

26.2.2021 | Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, employers are required to ensure healthy and safe workplaces. The COVID-19 epidemic has posed challenges for many workplaces. Recently, cases of COVID-19 reported at construction sites and shipyards have attracted particular attention.

31.3.2022 | Extensive legislative amendments related to market surveillance will enter into force in April. The amendments will modernise market surveillance to correspond to the changes in the operating environment of companies, such as more complex supply chains and online sales. The reform will update market surveillance to comply with the EU Market Surveillance Regulation. 

19.12.2024 | On 19 December 2024, the President of the Republic approved legislative amendments that will enable more local collective bargaining in companies. The amendments will enter into force on 1 January 2025.

5.9.2024 | Because of the reform, local collective bargaining would be possible regardless of whether the company belongs to an employers' association or what kind of employee representation the company has.

15.3.2024 | Allegations made about inappropriate conduct in the Finnish Foreign Service have recently been debated in public. All allegations of inappropriate conduct, harassment and sexual harassment are taken seriously and investigated, says Under-Secretary of State Pekka Puustinen.

9.4.2021 | The Ministry of the Interior sent out for comments a draft act on the treatment of persons in police custody and certain related acts. The purpose of this legislative reform is to update the provisions on custody-related rights, obligations and restrictions on fundamental rights of those deprived of their liberty, the powers of personnel performing guard duties and the obligations of the authorities.

13.9.2023 | Strengthening the labour market and international recruitment requires that proactive and effective measures are taken to tackle abuse in the labour market. In order to meet the objectives of the Government Programme, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will prepare an action plan to prevent and combat exploitation by the end of 2023.
