3.5.2026 | World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on 3 May. The day reminds us of the importance of free and independent media as the foundation for democracy, the rule of law and an open society. Finland promotes media freedom, which is fundamental to freedom of speech and expression, as part of its foreign and security policy.

29.4.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at the eighth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) to be held in the Armenian capital on Monday 4 May. The theme of the summit is Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe. Along with the heads of state or government of the countries involved in the EPC, representatives of EU institutions and the secretaries-general of NATO, the OSCE and the Council of Europe have been invited to the summit.

4.5.2026 | Prime Minister Orpo represented Finland at the eighth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in the Armenian capital of Yerevan on Monday 4 May. The theme of the summit was building the future through unity and stability in Europe.

12.11.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will host the national children’s Independence Day celebration on Wednesday 3 December at the National Opera House in Helsinki. This year, two children born in 2015 from each municipality have been invited to attend.

15.11.2024 | Independence Day is for everyone, both adults and children. This year, two children born in 2014 from each municipality have been invited to the National Opera House to celebrate 107 years of Finnish independence.

18.2.2025 | The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs will participate in the international Girls Takeover event run by Plan International, a children’s rights organisation. During the event, girls take over the roles of political, social and economic leaders. On 12 March, Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will step aside for the day to let Natasha Al-Zeilaa, an upper secondary school student from Vantaa, assume her post.

22.11.2024 | November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, as designated by the United Nations (UN). Violence against women is also a significant problem in Finland, and solving this problem is everyone’s responsibility. The Government Palace and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs’ main building, Merikasarmi, will be illuminated in orange as part of the international campaign.

27.11.2023 | Two children born in 2013 from each municipality of Finland have been invited to the Government Palace for the celebration. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will personally welcome each guest at the start of the event. Ministers Riikka Purra, Sari Multala and Sari Essayah will also be in attendance.

4.12.2023 | A total of 536 children from 266 municipalities took part in the children's Independence Day celebration at the Government Palace on 4 December. At the beginning of the celebration, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo shook hands with each guest and welcomed them personally to the event. The celebration was organised by the Prime Minister's Office, the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare and the Office of the Ombudsman for Children.

30.11.2022 | On 7 December, Prime Minister Sanna Marin will host an Independence Day celebration for over 560 children at the House of the Estates. Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko, Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson and Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Maria Ohisalo will also attend the event.

20.11.2025 | This week, 17–23 November 2025, is Children’s Rights Week. As in previous years, the Children’s Rights Week session was held at the Government Banquet Hall. Children and youth from various parts of Finland were invited to the session to discuss matters important to them with members of the Government.

16.11.2022 | This year’s Independence Day festivities will culminate with a celebration for children, when Prime Minister Sanna Marin hosts the Children’s Independence Day party on 7 December at the House of the Estates. Hundreds of ten-year-olds from all over Finland – two from each municipality – have been invited to the event.

16.3.2021 | The Nordic Council of Ministers (NCM) is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021. In tribute to this, NCM will organise five debates on Nordic Day, 23 March.

3.12.2021 | The Government will organise a festive illumination at Merikasarmi on Finland’s 104th Independence Day. The refurbished and modernised Merikasarmi premises were taken back into use in September.

19.3.2021 | Nordic Day is celebrated on 23 March in all the Nordic countries and Åland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland in honour of the fundamental treaty of Nordic cooperation, which was named after Helsinki and was signed on 23 March 1962. It defines the duties and composition of the Nordic Council and Nordic Council of Ministers and, in general, the main areas and methods of Nordic cooperation.

7.11.2025 | The UN Climate Change Conference COP30 will be held on 10–21 November in Belém, Brazil. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is organising four side events, where the focus will be on the circular bioeconomy, climate change adaptation and resilient food systems. 21.5.2021 | Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen will be one of the keynote speakers at Global Leadership Day, organised by AIESEC on 21 May 2021. In her speech, Haatainen will encourage young people to acquire different skills and seize the opportunities offered by the transformation of work. The Minister will also emphasise the importance of mobility for international students and workers.
