Goals and results
The purpose of the Roundtable is to create a common understanding and view of how Finland can make a just transition to a carbon neutral society even faster than envisaged so far.
The aim is to increase the acceptability of climate policy and give different stakeholders and experts a channel to participate in the national preparation of climate actions. The Climate Policy Roundtable translates into concrete terms the promises of the Government Programme on policy reform, non-discrimination, new forms of interaction, long-term policy and intergenerational justice.
Starting points
According to Prime Minister Marin’s Government Programme, all sectors of society must be involved in the fight against climate change. The Climate Policy Roundtable does not make decisions; instead, it supports the preparation and implementation of climate policy at the national level.
By bringing together a variety of operators in society, we can ensure that our climate actions are in the best interests of society and have broad approval from the public.
According to Prime Minister Marin’s Government Programme, Finland aims to be carbon neutral by 2035 and carbon negative shortly thereafter. Finland aims to be the first fossil-free welfare society. According to the Government Programme, emission reduction measures will be carried out in a way that is fair from a social and regional perspective and that involves all sectors of society.
In order to ensure a fair and just transition and acceptability of the climate measures, the Government has appointed a Climate Policy Roundtable within the National Commission on Sustainable Development for the duration of the government term.
The transition to a carbon neutral society will be implemented in a way that is fair and just, both socially and regionally. The key issue is to modify the structures of society in a direction where low-carbon solutions are attractive and profitable for businesses and people. Entrepreneurship, competitiveness and making use of the potential of the whole Finland are the key conditions for a fair transition.
The Roundtable will meet 5-7 times a year. The Climate Policy Roundtable was launched during spring 2020 and it met for the first time on 28 May 2020. The meeting focused on the economic recovery following the COVID-19 crisis, including green recovery.
The Roundtable will regularly report the results of its meetings to the Ministerial Working Group on Climate and Energy Policy, and the National Commission on Sustainable Development will be kept informed of the Roundtable’s work.
