22.4.2026 | At its meeting on 22 April, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs agreed on Finland’s positions for the informal European Council, where the key topics will be the current geopolitical situation and the EU’s multiannual financial framework for 2028–2034. The Ministerial Committee also discussed a revised proposal on EU military mobility.

22.4.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will attend an informal meeting of EU heads of state or government hosted by Cyprus, which currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU. The meeting will take place in Lefkosia and Agia Napa on 23–24 April. Discussions at the meeting will focus on current geopolitical challenges and the EU’s multiannual financial framework, which will serve as the Union’s long-term budget for 2028–2034.

25.1.2026 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet in Brussels on Monday 26 January. The Council will discuss the European Democracy Shield, continue the rule of law dialogue and hear a presentation from the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU on the priorities of its programme. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the meeting.

18.2.2026 | Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will attend an informal meeting of EU trade ministers in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 19–20 February. Topics on the meeting agenda include the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference and the EU’s trade relations with China. The ministers will also be briefed of the EU’s ongoing trade agreement negotiations with various trading partners.

22.1.2026 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 22 January for an informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. The home affairs ministers will discuss returns, reintegration and safeguarding the Schengen area. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen. 

17.12.2025 | Finland, together with Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden, has published a letter to the European Commission calling for new and innovative solutions to counter and prevent irregular migration to Europe.

31.1.2025 | Finland and the majority of the EU Member States have sent a joint letter calling on the European Investment Bank (EIB) to increase its financing for the European defence industry. The letter, drawn up at the initiative Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, is endorsed by France and Germany as well.
