29.4.2026 | In its meeting on Wednesday 29 April, the Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs discussed the issues on the agenda for the European Political Community (EPC) Summit, temporary protection for Ukrainians and the revision of the EU emissions trading system. The Ministerial Committee also outlined Finland’s positions for two council meetings taking place next week.

16.1.2026 | In its meeting on 16 January, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions on the Commission’s proposal for an amendment to the Market Stability Reserve Decision. The proposal aims to curb fluctuations in emission allowance prices when the new emissions trading system for road transport and buildings is launched in 2028.

18.3.2026 | The EU heads of state and government will meet for the European Council in Brussels on Thursday 19 March. Discussions at the meeting will focus on recent developments in the Middle East, the situation in Ukraine, European competitiveness and the single market, defence and security, and the EU’s multiannual financial framework for 2028−2034. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at the meeting.

18.6.2025 | In its meeting on Wednesday 18 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions the EU single market strategy and the proposal for a handling fee for goods ordered from outside the EU. The Ministerial Committee also discussed Finland’s positions on the 18th sanctions package currently under preparation and the review of the EU Emissions Trading Directive.

4.7.2025 | In its meeting on Friday 4 July, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions on the Commission’s proposal to simplify regulation for businesses and received an update on the preparation of a plan for affordable housing in the EU.

13.2.2025 | The Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs met on Thursday 13 February to discuss proposals for a new EU sanctions package against Russia and for additional tariffs on imports of agricultural products and certain fertilisers from Russia and Belarus into EU countries. The meeting also discussed the ECOFIN meeting and informal meeting of Ministers for European Affairs being held next week.

4.12.2024 | In its meeting on Wednesday 4 December, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs agreed on Finland’s positions on the deliberations for the EU pharmaceutical package. The Ministerial Committee on also outlined Finland’s positions for next week’s council meetings.

26.11.2024 | Minister of Finance Riikka Purra is pleased that the European Commission does not intend to propose opening an excessive deficit procedure for Finland.

4.10.2024 | The Cabinet Committee on EU Affairs has formulated the position of Finland on using immobilised Russian Central Bank assets to support Ukraine, and on establishing a cooperation mechanism for loans to Ukraine and granting macro-financial assistance to Ukraine.

19.6.2024 | In its meeting on Wednesday 19 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed the progress of Finland’s efforts to influence EU policy and ways to increase the number of Finns working in EU institutions. The Ministerial Committee also discussed the Union’s enlargement prospects and outlined Finland’s positions for upcoming meetings.

8.3.2024 | In its meeting on Friday 8 March, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs received an overview of topical issues being dealt with in the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN). The Ministerial Committee also outlined Finland’s positions for two upcoming council meetings.

7.7.2023 | On Friday 7 July, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined its positions on the mid-term review of the EU's multiannual financial framework, the reform of the EU fiscal policy framework and the development of the bank crisis management and deposit insurance (CMDI) framework.

13.6.2024 | In its meeting on Thursday 13 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland's positions on the development of the EU capital markets union and on the matters to be discussed at the informal meeting of EU leaders on 17 June.

23.5.2022 | Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko will represent Finland in the meeting of EU and euro area finance ministers in Brussels on 23–24 March.

8.2.2023 | On Wednesday 8 February, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs agreed on positions for the special meeting of the European Council to be held on 9–10 February and for the meetings of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (Ecofin) and the Eurogroup to be held on 13–14 February.

24.2.2022 | Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko will represent Finland at the informal meeting of ministers for the economy and finance (Ecofin) to be held in Paris on 25–26 February and in the Eurogroup on 25 February. The security policy situation in Europe will also come up during the meetings.

25.10.2023 | In its meeting on 25 October, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs decided on Finland’s positions for the October European Council and Euro Summit and outlined the Government’s priorities for the European Commission’s 2024 work programme.

7.2.2020 | Permanent Under-Secretary Tuomas Saarenheimo from the Finnish Ministry of Finance has been elected as President of the Eurogroup Working Group and the Economic and Financial Committee.

4.12.2019 | On Thursday 5 December, the finance ministers of EU member states will seek agreement on the coming years’ priorities in anti-money laundering, deepening of the capital markets union and climate change mitigation. The Economic and Financial Affairs Council (Ecofin) will be chaired by Finland’s Minister of Finance Mika Lintilä.
