24.2.2026 | The Finnish Government discussed recommendations, decisions and conclusions issued to Finland by international human rights monitoring bodies. Based on the discussion, the state secretaries of the parties in Government decided on further measures related to the recommendations. This was the second discussion held as part of the implementation of the Government’s equality statement.

28.5.2026 | On 28 May 2026, the European Court of Human Rights issued a decision in a case concerning the expropriation of a plot of land and the amount of compensation awarded for the expropriation. The Court unanimously declared the applicants’ complaint under Article 1 (protection of property) of Protocol No. 1 to the European Convention on Human Rights inadmissible as manifestly ill-founded.

9.6.2026 | On 9 June 2026, the European Court of Human Rights delivered its judgment concerning Finland in a case about the right to a fair trial. The case concerned whether an unreasoned arbitral award issued in arbitration proceedings violated the applicant company’s right to a fair trial as guaranteed in Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The Court unanimously held that Article 6 had not been violated.

12.3.2026 | On 12 March 2026, the European Court of Human Rights issued a decision in a case concerning the expropriation of real property and the amount of compensation paid for expropriation. The Court unanimously declared the applicants’ complaint under Article 1 (protection of property) of Protocol No. 1 to the European Convention on Human Rights inadmissible as manifestly ill-founded.

10.12.2025 | An informal conference of ministers of justice of the Council of Europe held in Strasbourg today, 10 December discussed topical migration issues and the role that the European Convention on Human Rights plays in addressing them responsibly.

14.5.2026 | The Council of Europe's annual session of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs will be held on 14–15 May in Chișinău, Moldova. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Secretary of State Pasi Rajala.

6.3.2025 | On 6 March 2025, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) delivered a decision on cases concerning additional tax on pension income. The ECtHR unanimously held that there had been no violation of Article 14 (prohibition of discrimination) of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and Article 1 of Protocol No. 12 (general prohibition of discrimination) to the Convention. The ECtHR declared the complaint under Article 13 (right to an effective remedy) of the Convention inadmissible.

3.4.2025 | On 3 April 2025, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) issued its decision in a case brought against Finland on the basis of Article 6 (right to a fair trial) of the European Convention on Human Rights. In the decision, the ECtHR, unanimously, declared the application inadmissible.

7.10.2025 | Minister of Youth, Sport and Physical Activity Mika Poutala will attend the 10th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for Youth on 8–10 October. At the meeting, the ministers will assess developments in youth policy in light of the Reykjavík Declaration and agree on future priorities. The aim is for the ministers to adopt a final declaration and commit to a framework on a youth perspective within the Council of Europe.

10.12.2025 | On 10 December, Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen represented Finland at the informal ministerial conference of the Council of Europe held in Strasbourg. The conference discussed topical migration issues and the role that the European Convention on Human Rights plays in addressing them responsibly.

9.11.2023 | On 9 November 2023, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) delivered a judgment on a case concerning the right to a fair hearing. The Court ruled that there had been no violation of Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights (right to a fair hearing).

12.10.2023 | On 12 October 2023, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) issued a decision on a case concerning continuation of detention on remand. The Court declared inadmissible the application alleging a violation of Article 5 (right to liberty and security of person) of the European Convention on Human Rights (Convention).

9.4.2024 | The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) delivered its decision today in a case brought by six Portuguese young persons against 33 states, including Finland, concerning the harmful effects of climate change. The decision is final.

16.5.2025 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health will organise an international conference in cooperation with the Council of Europe to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) as part of healthcare. The event is for invited guests, but anyone interested in the topic can follow the event as it will be streamed online.

9.5.2023 | On 9 May 2023, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) issued a judgement on a case concerning the processing of personal data. The Court held that there has been no violation of Article 6 (right to a fair trial) or of Article 9 (freedom of thought, conscience and religion) of the European Convention on Human Rights.

21.4.2021 | Adopted in June 2013, Protocol No. 15 amending the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR) will enter into force on 1 August 2021. It will introduce substantial changes to the right to submit applications to the European Court of Human Rights.

4.5.2022 | President of the European Court of Human Rights Robert Spano will visit Finland on 5–6 May.

1.8.2021 | Adopted in June 2013, Protocol No. 15 to the European Convention on Human Rights will enter into force on 1 August 2021. Its entry into force will reduce the application period to four months and also introduce other changes to the right to submit applications to the European Court of Human Rights. The shorter application period is, however, subject to a transition period, which ends on 1 February 2022.

17.3.2022 | On 17 March 2022, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) declared inadmissible an application concerning alleged discrimination against an applicant for a work-based residence permit.
