26.6.2025 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has sent out for comments the draft of the new Nuclear Energy Act. Primarily, the new act aims to ensure that the use of nuclear energy is in line with the overall good of society, that the operations are safe and that nuclear waste generated in Finland is handled properly.

6.11.2025 | Finland submitted the national exploration programme required by the European Critical Raw Materials Act to the European Commission on 12 September 2025. The programme has now been published on the website of the Geological Survey of Finland. The proposal for the programme was prepared by the Geological Survey of Finland and the programme was approved by Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto.

Responsibility includes ensuring the funds required for nuclear waste management and for the decommissioning of facilities. An extensive legislative reform is, however, required to streamline regulation and licensing. 7.10.2021 | On 7 October 2021, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal to amend the Act on the Safe Handling and Storage of Dangerous Chemicals and Explosives, the Mining Act and the Nuclear Energy Act.

30.12.2020 | The Act on the placing on the market of conflict minerals and their ores will improve the transparency of supply chains. The Act will bring Finland’s conflict minerals regime into line with EU regulations. The Government submitted the Act for approval by the President of the Republic on 30 December 2020. The Act will enter into force at the beginning of 2020.
