4.5.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior has launched a project to develop guidance for the public on how to prepare for emergency conditions. The guidance will complement existing preparedness advice in the Preparing for Incidents and Crises guide published on Suomi.fi.

14.3.2025 | The first Energy Council meeting under the Polish Presidency will be held in Brussels on 17 March 2025 with a focus on the Commission’s action plan for affordable energy and the energy security situation in the EU. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting.

13.6.2025 | In its meeting on Friday 13 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions on the Commission’s plans to phase out energy imports from Russia, the Commission’s communication on artificial intelligence and its proposal regarding the Asylum Procedure Regulation. The Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs also discussed the EU–Mercosur Association Agreement.

16.3.2026 | The EU Environment Council will meet in Brussels on Tuesday 17 March. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting. Minister Multala stresses that now it is highly important to defend a consistent climate policy and, in particular, the emissions trading system.

26.6.2025 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has sent out for comments the draft of the new Nuclear Energy Act. Primarily, the new act aims to ensure that the use of nuclear energy is in line with the overall good of society, that the operations are safe and that nuclear waste generated in Finland is handled properly.

15.11.2024 | At its meeting on Friday 15 November, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs specified Finland’s positions on the revision of the Energy Taxation Directive. The Ministerial Committee also outlined Finland’s positions for next week’s council meetings.

4.5.2026 | Prime Minister Orpo represented Finland at the eighth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in the Armenian capital of Yerevan on Monday 4 May. The theme of the summit was building the future through unity and stability in Europe.

4.11.2024 | The world states will convene at the Climate Change Conference COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan on 11–22 November. The aim is to decide on a new common climate finance target. A faster energy transition will be needed as the countries are preparing to set new emission reduction targets during next year.

8.12.2023 | The Council of the European Union, European Parliament and European Commission reached a provisional agreement on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). The aim of the directive is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings and their energy consumption.

11.10.2024 | The EU energy ministers will convene in Luxembourg on 15 October 2024 for the official Energy Council under the Hungarian Presidency. There are no decisions on the agenda of the meeting. The ministers will discuss follow-up measures to the recommendations of Draghi’s competitiveness report, preparedness for the upcoming winter season and divergence in wholesale electricity prices.

14.8.2024 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal met in Helsinki on 13–14 August. Their discussions focused on cooperation between Finland and Estonia, improving European security and defence, and other topical EU matters.

14.10.2024 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted a total of EUR 44,546,484 in investment aid to 12 projects under the national Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). Moreover, by a decision supported by the Ministerial Finance Committee on 3 October, EUR 28,048,200 was granted to Nordic Ren-Gas Oy for a large demonstration project on new energy technology.

13.11.2025 | In its meeting on 13 November, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions on the European Commission’s proposal for the multiannual financial framework, which will serve as the Union’s long-term budget for 2028–2034. The ministerial committee on also outlined Finland’s positions three council meetings to be held next week.

28.11.2023 | The parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change will convene for the COP28 Climate Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on 30 November–12 December. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at the high-level segment of the Conference on 1–2 December. During the ministerial week between 8 and 12 December, Finland’s delegation will be led by Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen.

13.12.2022 | The EU energy ministers will meet at an extraordinary Council meeting in Brussels on 13 December 2022. The only item on the agenda is the European Commission’s proposal of 22 November for a Council regulation establishing a market correction mechanism to protect citizens and the economy against excessively high gas prices.

18.2.2022 | Energy prices have risen substantially over the past year both in Finland and throughout Europe. Energy prices have risen less in Finland than the euro zone average, but significantly nonetheless. The Government has decided on temporary targeted measures in response to rising energy prices.

7.6.2022 | On Monday 6 June, Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen met in Riga with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs and with two members of the Latvian Saeima (parliament): Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee Rihards Kols and Chair of the European Affairs Committee Marija Golubeva.

16.6.2022 | Finland clearly exceeded its binding energy saving obligation set on the basis of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive in 2014–2020. At the end of 2020, the total energy savings achieved exceeded the national obligation by more than 85 per cent. All other energy saving targets set for Finland were also achieved.
