  8. 12.6.2025 | On 16 April, the European Commission submitted a proposal to establish a list of safe countries of origin for asylum seekers. The aim is to facilitate a swift examination of asylum applications that are likely to be unfounded: if the applicant comes from a safe country of origin, the examination of their application would be accelerated.   11. 19.6.2025 | The interior ministers of Finland, Norway, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Sweden will meet in Estonia on 19 and 20 June. At the same time, restrictions would be placed on the ability of beneficiaries of international protection to visit the countries from which they have fled.   15. 16.4.2025 | The Government has renewed its decision on the closure of border crossing points on the eastern border. On 16 April 2025, the Government decided that the border crossing points on the eastern border remain closed and the submission of applications for international protection continue to be centralised.   18. 21.11.2024 | International protection will be made temporary in nature and the length of permits will be shortened to the minimum allowed by EU law. Committing offences and endangering national security will lead to the refusal or end of protection status. The Government submitted the amendments to the Aliens Act for approval on Thursday 21 November. The President of the Republic is to approve the amendments on Friday. The amendments will enter into force on 2 January 2025.

  19. 18.4.2024 | On 18 April, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal for introducing a new border procedure. The Aliens Act will be amended in line with the EU Asylum Procedures Directive to introduce the new border procedure in Finland. The purpose of the border procedure is to enhance the examination of unfounded applications and the return of applicants whose application has been rejected. In addition, this will prevent secondary movements of asylum seekers to other EU countries.
