29.12.2022 | On 29 December 2022, the President of the Republic approved the Act on the National Implementation of the Brexit Adjustment Reserve. Funds from the Reserve will be used to support companies that have been negatively affected by the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. The support is channelled as business development aid from the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres). 

21.4.2022 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment requests comments on the draft legislative proposal that would implement the EU’s Brexit adjustment reserve. Companies affected negatively by the UK’s withdrawal from the EU would be supported from the reserve. The Act is necessary for the utilisation of the funding reserved for Finland.

31.12.2020 | The UK’s withdrawal from the EU will be complete on 1 January 2021. The Trade and Cooperation Agreement and the complementary agreements on security of classified information and nuclear cooperation, which were agreed by the EU Commission and the UK on 24 December 2020, will be applied provisionally from the beginning of the year. The agreements have not yet been ratified but the provisional application of the agreements prevents the UK’s withdrawal from the Union without a deal.

4.2.2021 | The Government has adopted a favourable position on the European Commission’s proposal on a Brexit adjustment reserve. The aid distributed from the reserve would help counter the negative impact of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, especially in the Member States, regions and sectors worst affected by it.

Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen represented Finland at the meeting.

7.2.2019 | UK citizens’ right of residence in Finland will continue for a fixed term under a special act. The act is being prepared for the eventuality of a no-deal Brexit in which the UK withdraws from the EU without an agreement at the end of March. The Government submitted a proposal on the special act to Parliament on 7 February.

16.1.2019 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, together with other authorities and actors, has prepared for the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union (or Brexit). In a vote held on 15 January, the British Parliament rejected the UK withdrawal agreement from the European Union. The result of the vote does not mean an immediate withdrawal without any agreement. Further plans of the United Kingdom are expected to be announced within the next few days.

25.1.2019 | On 25 January, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs supported the Ministry of the Interior’s proposal to draft a special act to continue, for a fixed term, UK citizens’ right of residence in Finland. The act is being prepared for the eventuality of a no-deal Brexit, where the UK withdraws from the EU without an agreement at the end of March.

27.5.2022 | Minister of Education Li Andersson visited London this week. Tuesday 24 May Andersson participated in a panel discussion at the Education World Forum, which focused on educational equality, digitalisation, smooth educational paths and international cooperation.

18.11.2022 | The EU General Affairs Council will meet in Brussels on Friday 18 November. Items on the agenda include preparations for the December European Council and a discussion on respect for the EU’s common values. In addition, the Commission will present its work programme for 2023. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen will represent Finland at the meeting.

3.2.2023 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet in Brussels on Monday 6 February. The meeting will focus on preparations for the February Special European Council. The GAC will also discuss relations between the EU and the United Kingdom and receive an overview of Sweden’s priorities for its Presidency of the Council of the EU. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen will represent Finland at the meeting.

16.6.2020 | In their informal videoconference on Tuesday 16 June, the ministers for European affairs discussed the recovery package proposed by the Commission to boost the Union’s economy following the COVID-19 crisis. This first ministerial discussion on the subject will provide a basis for the videoconference of EU leaders on Friday.

28.12.2020 | The Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs is of the view that the Council must still make a decision on the signing and provisional application of the agreements on the future EU–UK relationship before the end of 2020. This will prevent a “no-deal” scenario, in which the EU and UK fail to sign the agreements before the Brexit transition period ends on 31 December 2020. The Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs adopted its position on Monday 28 December in a written procedure.
