20.7.2020 | At the informal meeting of the EU competitiveness ministers on 21 July 2020, ministers responsible for research and innovation will discuss the EU’s ability to use research and innovation as a tool to address the current and future challenges in society. Three EU initiatives proposed by the German Presidency will serve as a basis for these discussions. 26.3.2020 | At their videoconference on Thursday 26 March, the Members of the European Council noted that combating the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and protecting the EU citizens requires urgent, decisive, and comprehensive action at the EU, national, regional and local levels. The EU leaders expressed their deepest sympathy with the victims of the pandemic and their families and praised the sense of responsibility of the citizens and the dedication of healthcare professionals in their work.

16.6.2020 | Finland has published its views on strengthening the EU’s single market. The EU needs a single market that operates in a fair, open and transparent way in order to achieve its objectives of a climate-neutral economy and digital leadership. It should be easier to expand business activities to another EU country and to provide consumers with services throughout the EU.

12.6.2020 | Measures to revitalise working life after the coronavirus crisis will be discussed at the informal meeting of the Nordic Council of Ministers for Labour on 12 June 2020. The Ministers will also discuss the EU’s minimum wage initiative. Finland’s representatives at the video conference are Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen and Minister of Social Affairs and Health Aino-Kaisa Pekonen.

10.12.2019 | During 2020–2021, Finland will provide European citizens with free access to a successful online course, the Elements of AI. The course will be made available in all the official EU languages. This initiative by the Finnish Presidency aims to respond to the challenges posed by the transformation of work and to reinforce the digital leadership of the EU.

Under the withdrawal agreement, all UK citizens, including those who have a document certifying a permanent right of EU residence in Finland, must exchange that document for a residence permit card.

17.3.2023 | On 16 March 2023, the Commission issued legislative proposals to promote climate neutral “net zero technologies” and the availability of critical raw materials. Both proposals aim to speed up the green transition and strengthen the EU’s self-sufficiency. Technologies that accelerate the green transition are at the heart of global technological competition. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will organise a consultation on the proposals for stakeholders on 28 March 2023.

25.1.2019 | At its meeting on 25 January, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs decided on the need to prepare a special act to continue UK citizens’ right of residence in Finland for a fixed term. The act is needed to prepare for the eventuality of a no-deal Brexit, where the UK withdraws from the EU without an agreement at the end of March.

27.3.2025 | The European Commission published the Preparedness Union Strategy on Wednesday 26 March, outlining actions to strengthen the security of the European Union over the next five years. The strategy aims to build a more resilient and secure Europe where citizens are protected. We must be able to prepare for all kinds emerging threats, ranging from extreme weather events to hybrid threats. We cannot ignore the most serious scenarios either, and Europe must also prepare for the possibility of war.

22.9.2025 | The Government proposes EUR 245 million for the operating expenses of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The operating expenses will be subject to an additional saving of EUR 6.4 million. The impact of the saving in development cooperation outlined in the Government Programme will increase by EUR 73 million. Moreover, additional savings totalling EUR 70 million will be allocated to development cooperation appropriations.
