25.6.2026 | The clean energy transition continues to make good progress: the use of fossil energy sources keeps decreasing in industry, electricity production and heating. The trend in emissions takes us in the right direction, but more work will be needed in all sectors to reach the climate targets nationally and at the EU level.

9.7.2026 | An informal meeting of EU ministers responsible for competitiveness (internal market and industry) will be held in Dublin on 9–10 July 2026. Finland will be represented by Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto.

25.6.2026 | EU energy ministers will meet in Luxembourg on 26 June 2026. The main item on the agenda of the meeting of the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council is to reach a general approach on the development of trans-European networks for energy. The ministers will also discuss the planning of post-2030 energy policy, as well as coordination and response measures to the energy impacts of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

6.10.2025 | The Finnish Government aims to improve fair market competition. With this in mind, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is now requesting comments on a memorandum assessing the reform of competitive neutrality regulation. After reviewing the comments received, the Government will decide whether any legislative amendments are needed.

11.2.2026 | VR-Group Plc and Suomen Ostoliikennekalusto Oy announced today that they have signed an asset purchase agreement concerning the rolling stock used in passenger rail services funded by the government. The rolling stock will be transferred to Suomen Ostoliikennekalusto's ownership from the beginning of March.

22.10.2025 | The meeting of the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs on Wednesday 22 October focused on the October European Council and the Euro Summit, the next multiannual EU budget and next week's Agriculture and Fisheries Council.

13.11.2025 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve amendments to the Act on Transport Services on 14 November 2025. These legislative amendments give municipalities and joint municipal and other regional authorities the option to arrange passenger rail services in their respective areas. The amended act will also provide for the grounds to be taken into account when making changes to the distribution of regional competence concerning local rail transport.

21.10.2025 | Following complex negotiations and a rare vote, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) decided to postpone the final adoption of the long-discussed regulation package on maritime transport emissions by at least one year. The decision means that the proposed regulation will not come into force as originally scheduled in March 2027.

20.10.2025 | The EU heads of state or government will meet for the European Council on 23 October in Brussels. The meeting will focus on support for Ukraine, efforts to strengthen European defence, the EU’s competitiveness and the clean transition, the Middle East, migration and housing. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at the meeting.

13.11.2025 | The Finnish Government submitted a communication to Parliament on 13 November 2025 regarding the European Commission’s proposal for a Regulation on the Connecting Europe Facility for the period 2028–2034. The Government welcomes the proposal and emphasises that funding should be more strongly directed towards strengthening defence and security, among other sectors. 

13.10.2025 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London on 14–17 October 2025. The extraordinary session of the Committee is to decide on historic and globally binding measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.

4.9.2025 | The European Commission gave its proposal concerning amendments to the European Climate Law in July 2025. On 4 September 2025, the Finnish Government submitted a Union communication to Parliament where it states its opinion on the Commission’s proposal.

4.4.2025 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London on 7–11 April 2025. The objective of the Committee’s 83rd session is to agree on legally binding measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. The reduction targets have been agreed on in the IMO’s greenhouse gas strategy.

17.10.2025 | EU energy ministers will meet in Luxembourg on 20 October 2025. In the meeting, the aim is to approve the Council's general approach on the RePowerEU regulation to gradually phase out natural gas imports from Russia. The other main item on the agenda is to discuss the role of electrification as a driver of the EU’s competitive and clean transition. Finland will be represented at the meeting by the Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

11.4.2025 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London on 7–11 April 2025. After challenging negotiations, the Committee’s 83rd session reached a provisional agreement on measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. The final decisions are to be made in October 2025.

13.11.2025 | The Conference on Energy Transition in Capture Fisheries discussed the opportunities offered by new energy sources and electricity and ways to reduce the use of energy. The conference gave wide support to the declaration of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry on boosting energy transition in the fisheries sector.
