7.4.2026 | The evaluation explored the objectives of the Climate Act and the means to achieve these from the perspectives of impact, cost-effectiveness and acceptability. The process was led by the Ministry of the Environment. Meeting the objectives requires additional measures, especially in the land use sector.

18.12.2025 | A report based on the Government Programme assesses the need for personal sanctions related to cartels. According to the report, there is no clear need for personal sanctions; instead, competition processes should be accelerated in general. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will begin an investigation into the matter.

18.12.2025 | Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala and Estonia’s Minister of Energy and the Environment Anders Sutt discussed future opportunities for Finnish-Estonian energy cooperation in Helsinki on 18 December 2025. The countries have so far had successful collaboration on developing the transmission networks for electricity and gas, protecting critical infrastructure and creating a common electricity market.

8.3.2024 | On Friday 8 March, Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen visited Kyiv at the invitation of Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strilets. During the visit, he also met Oleksandr Kubrakov, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine and Deputy Minister of Energy Svitlana Grynchuk.

4.7.2025 | The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has launched an extensive package of measures that aims to strengthen forest growth and carbon sinks on a long-term basis. The package is based on the Government Programme and it will contribute to the achievement of the climate targets. The measures have been prepared in close interaction with stakeholders and researchers. Various actors in the forest sector have a key role in the implementation of the measures.

19.10.2024 | Finland promotes Environmental Security in war-ravaged Ukraine. Minister of Climate and the Environment of Finland Kai Mykkänen and Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Svitlana Hrynchuk agreed on stronger cooperation in the forest, nature, meteorology and energy sectors.

29.8.2024 | Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen will meet representatives of the forest sector on 10 September. The Ministry of the Environment is exploring further actions that could be taken to protect threatened habitats.

4.11.2024 | The world states will convene at the Climate Change Conference COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan on 11–22 November. The aim is to decide on a new common climate finance target. A faster energy transition will be needed as the countries are preparing to set new emission reduction targets during next year.

17.10.2024 | At Ukraine’s request, Finland will host a meeting dedicated to the eighth point of the Ukrainian Peace Formula, Environmental Security, on Saturday 19 October. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will deliver the opening address at the meeting, which will be chaired by Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Kai Mykkänen.

25.11.2024 | Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah visits Canada with a delegation of the Finnish forestry and bioeconomy actors on 24–28 November. Minister Essayah will deliver the keynote speech at the Scaling Up Bioeconomy Conference 2024 in Ottawa. Finland is the Feature Country of this year’s conference. In addition, the Minister and the business delegation will visit the province of Quebec.

8.3.2024 | Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen visits Kyiv on 8 March 2024. The purpose of the visit is to discuss the environmental damages caused by the war, energy situation in Ukraine and Finland’s support for Ukraine’s reconstruction and assistance to the Ukrainian energy sector.

23.2.2024 | The world’s highest-level decision-making body for matters related to the environment, the United Nations Environment Assembly UNEA, will convene at its sixth session in Nairobi, Kenya on 26 February–1 March. UNEA-6 will bring UN Member States and representatives of civil society groups, the scientific community and the private sector together to seek solutions to acute environmental challenges. Finland’s UNEA delegation will be led by Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen.

30.11.2023 | On Thursday 30 November, the parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change reached an agreement on a fund to compensate for climate loss and damage. The fund has been a high priority especially for small and poor countries.

2.10.2024 | Ministers responsible for forest affairs in Europe signed a declaration on the development of sustainable forest management and decided to set up a facility that will focus on anticipating and managing the risks to forests. The declaration was signed by 35 Member States and supported by more than 20 observer organisations. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah represented Finland at the Conference, held in Bonn, Germany on 1–2 October 2024.

16.5.2023 | The Council of Europe has long been monitoring Russia’s alarming situation of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. For many years, the Council tried to exert influence over Russia by keeping the country as a Member and within the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). However, Russia launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 was the last straw, and the Council decided to expel Russia only three weeks later.

28.2.2024 | Today, the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Governments of the Member States (Coreper) discussed the due diligence obligations of companies concerning corporate social responsibility, i.e. the EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence. Despite Finland’s constructive influence, the proposed Directive failed to receive a qualified majority of votes in Coreper.

14.12.2023 | On 14 December 2023, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal for changes to the Posted Workers Act. The Act would be amended to better meet the requirements of two EU Directives. The Government’s proposal is based on infringement proceedings the European Commission has initiated against Finland.

27.10.2023 | On 26 October, on the first day of the European Council meeting in Brussels, the EU leaders discussed the situation in the Middle East. The European Council condemned Hamas’ attacks on Israel and called on Hamas to immediately release all hostages while underlining the importance of ensuring protection of all civilians and enabling humanitarian access and aid to reach those in need in Gaza. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo represented Finland at the meeting.

3.2.2022 | On 3 February 2022, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) declared inadmissible two applications concerning the length of proceedings for damages in a criminal case.

21.6.2022 | The annual meeting of the European Goose Management International Working Group under the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds AEWA will be held in Helsinki on 21–23 June 2022. AEWA and its Individual Species Working Groups (ISWG) are important for Finland in terms of the protection and sustainable exploitation of the migratory aquatic and shore birds found in Finland.
