4.1.2024 | The price of exchange electricity – the spot price of electricity sold on the power exchange – will rise to record levels on Friday 5 January 2024. Even at its lowest, the hourly changing price of electricity, including the Finnish value added tax, will be more than a euro per kilowatt-hour (kWh) between 6.00 and 21.00 and more than two euros between 15.00 and 20.00.

7.5.2026 | The State is selling Class B shares in Fingrid to OP Pohjola. Earlier this year, the State acquired the Class A shares in Fingrid owned by Ilmarinen. Fifty of these shares will now be converted into Class B shares. Following the arrangement, the State’s holdings in Fingrid will 59.5 per cent.

28.1.2021 | On 28 January 2021, the Government submitted a proposal to Parliament to curb the rise in electricity distribution prices and cut the profits of distribution companies by amending the Electricity Market Act and the Act on the Supervision of the Electricity and Natural Gas Market. The Acts are intended to enter into force as soon as possible.

4.5.2026 | Prime Minister Orpo represented Finland at the eighth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in the Armenian capital of Yerevan on Monday 4 May. The theme of the summit was building the future through unity and stability in Europe.

4.8.2023 | Before Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, approximately one third of the energy used in Finland was imported from Russia. That share was reduced almost to zero in a few months, and the energy war launched by Russia increased consumer prices remarkably. As the energy markets have changed, it is the time to look how Russian energy was replaced and what more permanent effects trade changes will have.

18.2.2022 | Energy prices have risen substantially over the past year both in Finland and throughout Europe. Energy prices have risen less in Finland than the euro zone average, but significantly nonetheless. The Government has decided on temporary targeted measures in response to rising energy prices.

1.12.2021 | The EU's Energy Council will convene in Brussels on 2 December 2021. State Secretary Jukka Ihanus will represent Finland on behalf of Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä. The meeting will focus on the energy initiatives in the Fit for 55 package concerning renewable energy and energy efficiency and the recent rise in energy prices in Europe.

21.2.2022 | Datahub, the centralised information exchange system for the electricity retail market, went live on 21 February 2022. Datahub centralises the data from about 3.8 million electricity accounting points in a single system, and it significantly accelerates the exchange of information in the electricity retail market. Datahub is a key part of the flexible power system of the future.

21.1.2022 | The EU’s environment and energy ministers will convene in informal meetings in Amiens, France on 20–22 January 2022. Emma Kari, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, and Jukka Ihanus, State Secretary to Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä, will represent Finland in the meetings hosted by France.

18.12.2019 | The price level of CO2 emission allowances has varied considerably since the introduction of the EU emissions trading scheme (ETS), which may have an impact on the guiding effect of the system in the short and long term. A regional carbon price floor (CPF) has been proposed as a means to ensure the guiding effect of emissions trading in all market situations. What has been suggested is to introduce CPF regionally, e.g. in the Nordic countries or in the Nordic and Baltic countries.

13.12.2022 | The EU energy ministers will meet at an extraordinary Council meeting in Brussels on 13 December 2022. The only item on the agenda is the European Commission’s proposal of 22 November for a Council regulation establishing a market correction mechanism to protect citizens and the economy against excessively high gas prices.

4.11.2025 | Rapporteur Veli-Matti Mattila proposes in his report measures such as continuing electricity tax relief and streamlining permit procedures for data centres with high value added.

13.11.2025 | The Finnish Government submitted a communication to Parliament on 13 November 2025 regarding the European Commission’s proposal for a Regulation on the Connecting Europe Facility for the period 2028–2034. The Government welcomes the proposal and emphasises that funding should be more strongly directed towards strengthening defence and security, among other sectors. 

14.3.2025 | The first Energy Council meeting under the Polish Presidency will be held in Brussels on 17 March 2025 with a focus on the Commission’s action plan for affordable energy and the energy security situation in the EU. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting.

11.10.2024 | The EU energy ministers will convene in Luxembourg on 15 October 2024 for the official Energy Council under the Hungarian Presidency. There are no decisions on the agenda of the meeting. The ministers will discuss follow-up measures to the recommendations of Draghi’s competitiveness report, preparedness for the upcoming winter season and divergence in wholesale electricity prices.

Although the energy crisis has largely been overcome, geopolitical uncertainty continues and strong investments in military and civilian security are necessary. The political situation in many Member States is unstable, including Germany and France.

11.2.2019 | The high purchase prices of electric vehicles and challenges of charging in housing companies are currently slowing down the development of the electric vehicle market and public charging infrastructure and the natural growth of the electric vehicle base. A cost-efficient way to accelerate the market would be to introduce more electric vehicles to the vehicle base, but this will require effective promotion measures in the next few years.

13.11.2024 | On 13 November 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published the national programme on the distribution infrastructure for alternative fuels. The programme, which was drawn up in broad-based cooperation with stakeholders, facilitates the implementation of EU regulation.
