6.3.2025 | The Government proposes to improve the efficiency of examining asylum applications. At the same time, restrictions would be placed on the ability of beneficiaries of international protection to visit the countries from which they have fled. The enforcement of deportation decisions would also be streamlined. The Government submitted the proposal for the amendments to the Aliens Act to Parliament on 6 March. The intention is that the proposed amendments would enter into force as soon as possible.

16.4.2026 | The Government has submitted to Parliament a proposal for an act on the automated search and exchange of information for European police cooperation. The proposal would introduce amendments to national legislation required by the EU regulation known as Prüm II.

13.6.2025 | This week, the Finnish sanctions authorities will send a letter to companies cautioning them that they may be used as platforms or targets for circumventing trade sanctions. The purpose of this letter is to draw attention to the sanctions in force and to provide assistance in complying with them.

6.2.2025 | On 6 February, the Government submitted a proposal for provisions on export authorisation for ammunition. The proposal supplements the European Union's sanctions legislation.

22.5.2025 | The efficiency of examining asylum applications will be improved. The enforcement of deportation decisions will also be streamlined. The Government submitted the new amendments to the Aliens Act for approval on 22 May. The President of the Republic is scheduled to approve the amendments on 23 May, and they will enter into force on 1 June.

21.4.2023 | A new human rights treaty will enter into force in Finland. The International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance will enter into force in Finland on 23 April 2023. Finland ratified the Convention a month earlier in New York.

15.2.2024 | The promotion of work-based immigration requires that exploitation of foreign labour is effectively and proactively combatted. The new action plan for prevention of labour exploitation will tackle the phenomenon with legislative reforms and increased cooperation between the authorities during the government term.

25.10.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a draft government proposal for an act on export authorisation for cartridge components and on acts amending the Firearms Act and chapter 46, section 1 of the Criminal Code. The aim is to prevent the export of cartridge components to Russia in particular. The draft proposal is being circulated for comments until 28 November 2024.

13.10.2023 | The Ministry of the Interior has set up a project tasked with incorporating the Ingå port area into the Decree of the Ministry of the Interior on Restrictions on Movement, Access and Stay. The Decree includes sites and locations where access is restricted and movement or stay is prohibited under the Police Act.

31.10.2023 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen and Danish Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard met in Copenhagen on 31 October. They discussed youth and gang crime and its prevention, young offenders below the age of criminal liability and Finland's new Government Programme.

1.12.2023 | The Ministry of the Interior will incorporate the Ingå port area into the Decree of the Ministry of the Interior on Restrictions on Movement, Access and Stay. Movement, access and stay in the area will be restricted under the Police Act. The amended Decree will enter into force on 4 December 2023.

10.11.2022 | In September 2022, the European Commission proposed regulation that would ban products made with forced labour. While the Government supports the proposal’s objective, certain points need to be considered during the negotiations.

18.8.2021 | This week, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has released a non-return advisory calling for all countries to suspend the return of Afghan nationals to their country of origin. The advisory also applies to the return of asylum seekers who have had their claims rejected. Finland has followed this policy for several weeks now.

7.10.2020 | The Ministry of the Interior and the National Police Board have launched a new social media campaign for young people that aims to encourage them to think about the way we use social media to discuss issues and the impacts of hate speech in their surroundings and in society as a whole.

The aim is to improve the reception and treatment of waste in ports, which will reduce the generation of marine litter and discharge of plastics into the seas. The process also includes updating the Act on Environmental Protection in Maritime Transport and the regulation concerning vessel safety. The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft legislative proposal by 17 December 2020.

17.11.2022 | The provisions of the Police Act on secret intelligence gathering methods and apprehending wanted persons are to be updated and clarified. The Government submitted its proposal to Parliament on 17 November.

16.9.2019 | The Conference on Preventing Violent Radicalisation will bring together a wide range of international experts at Finlandia Hall, Helsinki, on 17–18 September 2019. They will discuss the prevention of violent radicalisation from the viewpoint of research, practical experiences and the work of public authorities.

31.8.2023 | On 31 August, the Government adopted a statement to Parliament on measures to promote equality, gender equality and non-discrimination in Finnish society.
