13.3.2025 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has adopted the financial statement of the National Nuclear Waste Management Fund for 2024 and decided on the recognition of the profit of the Fund as revenue. The Fund consists of two separate funds, the Financial Provision Fund and the Research Fund for Nuclear Energy Expertise.

14.5.2021 | On 14 May 2021, Teollisuuden Voima Oyj submitted an environmental impact assessment report concerning its project on the final disposal of very low-level nuclear waste in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant area to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment acts as the coordinating authority in the project.

16.2.2023 | On 16 February 2023, the Government granted an operating licence to Fortum Power and Heat Oy (Fortum) for nuclear power plants units Loviisa 1 (LO1) and Loviisa 2 (LO2), in accordance with the Nuclear Energy Act. The new operating licence allows energy production at the nuclear power plant units until the end of 2050. The current operating licences for Loviisa expire on 31 December 2027 (LO1) and 31 December 2030 (LO2).

9.5.2022 | Finland and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on energy on 9 May 2022. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) aims to develop technical and economic cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector and to promote the access of Finnish companies to the Emirati market.

31.8.2023 | This year, more than 40 per cent of Finnish electricity is produced with nuclear energy. In the future, nuclear energy can also be produced in smaller units and used for new purposes, such as heating industry and buildings. A new outlook for the sector's activities requires a new approach also in the administration.

7.6.2022 | “Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, we are in a historical situation where we have to find energy solutions independent of the imports from Russia. Together with climate change, this poses an enormous challenge. We need to make use of all tools and capabilities to find solutions to these challenges and increase our resilience,” Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä said in his speech at the opening event of the Nordic Nuclear Forum 2022 in Helsinki on 7 June 2022.

30.12.2021 | On 30 December 2021, Posiva Oy submitted to the Government an operating licence application referred to in the Nuclear Energy Act for an encapsulation plant and a disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel. The facility is currently under construction in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki. Posiva is applying for an operating licence for a period from March 2024 to the end of 2070.

24.11.2020 | Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi will visit Finland on 25–26 November 2020. On Wednesday, he will meet President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä and discuss with Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto and Minister for Development and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari. On Thursday, Mr Grossi will visit Eurajoki.

8.2.2022 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment requests comments on Posiva Oy’s application for an operating licence that the company submitted to the Government on 30 December 2021 for an encapsulation plant and a disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel. The encapsulation plant is located above ground and an underground repository of the disposal facility is located in the bedrock at a depth of approximately 400–430 metres in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki.

10.2.2021 | On 10 February 2021, the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) submitted a letter to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment limiting its application of 2017 to decommission the FiR 1 research reactor in Otaniemi. The limitation concerns the return of the reactor’s spent fuel to the United States according to a programme agreed by Finland and the US in the 1960s.

27.8.2020 | A working group that has examined the need to reform the nuclear energy legislation considers it necessary to launch a comprehensive legislative reform because of the ambiguity of the current legislation, changes in the operating environment of nuclear facilities and the expected developments. The working group submitted its final report to Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä on 27 August 2020.

5.3.2024 | On 4 March 2023, the EU Member States, European Parliament and Commission reached a provisional political agreement on a proposal for a regulation on packaging and packaging waste. Finland has taken an active part in the preparation of the regulation. The proposal that was agreed on can be evaluated in further detail only after its final content is available. The proposal is still pending formal adoption by the Member States and Parliament.

29.1.2019 | The Finnish research programme on Nuclear Waste Management, KYT2018, is at the end of its four-year term. The final seminar on 29 January 2019 at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki presents the achievements of the programme and considers how national nuclear waste research best supports the safe use of nuclear energy in Finland.

7.7.2023 | On Friday 7 July, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined its positions on the mid-term review of the EU's multiannual financial framework, the reform of the EU fiscal policy framework and the development of the bank crisis management and deposit insurance (CMDI) framework.

25.8.2023 | The proposal of the Ministry of Finance for the 2024 budget and spending limits for 2024–2027 ensures implementation of the policies in the Government Programme. The budget proposal totals EUR 87.2 billion, and a deficit of EUR 10.1 billion is proposed. The budget total is EUR 3.7 billion higher than the total budgeted for 2023, including the first supplementary budget. The budget proposal will be published in full at budjetti.vm.fi on Monday 28 August.
