2.6.2025 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is organising a consultation round from 2 June to 28 July 2025 on legislative amendments to the grounds for fixed-term employment contracts, the duration of the notice period for layoffs and the re-employment obligation of employers. The proposed amendments have been prepared in a tripartite working group that was not unanimous in its work.

9.9.2024 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has appointed two new tripartite working groups to draw up the Government's labour market reforms. One of the working groups will focus on those grounds for terminating employment that are related to the employee's person. The other will handle the grounds for fixed-term employment contracts, the period of notice for layoffs, and the reemployment obligation.

14.11.2024 | On 14 November 2024, the Government appointed Riku Huttunen, M.Pol.Sc., as Director General of the Energy Department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment for a fixed term of five years starting on 1 January 2025. Huttunen will continue in the position in which he first began on 1 January 2015.

11.12.2024 | The Team Finland reform proceeds. After the transitional period, the foreign operations of Business Finland will be incorporated into the Foreign Service. The appropriation of Business Finland’s foreign network will be transferred to the administrative branch of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on 1 January 2025. The service agreement ensures that the export promotion services will continue without interruption.

8.8.2025 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health proposes appropriations of EUR 14.8 billion for the Ministry and its branch of government for 2026. This is about EUR 475 million less than in the 2025 Budget. The funding of wellbeing services counties is not included in the appropriations for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and its branch of government. Instead, it falls under the main title of the Ministry of Finance.

21.11.2024 | On Thursday 21 November, the Government submitted its proposal to Parliament to amend the budget proposal for 2025. Some items in the proposal concern the Government's EUR 4 billion investment programme. The proposal will increase the revenue estimate by EUR 67 million and the requirement for appropriations by EUR 405 million.

23.11.2023 | On Thursday 23 November, the Government submitted its proposal to Parliament to amend the budget proposal for 2024. Among others, the proposal includes amendments related to support for Ukraine, the health and social services transfer calculation and central government transfers to local government. In line with the proposal, the revenue estimate will be increased by EUR 76 million, while the need for appropriations will decrease by EUR 48 million.

24.11.2022 | On Thursday 24 November, the Government appointed Liisa Siika-aho as Director General of the Department for Insurance and Social Security at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. She will take up her duties on 1 December 2022. The appointment is for a fixed term until 30 November 2027.

4.6.2020 | On 4 June 2020, the Government submitted a proposal for an act on local government trials on boosting employment. According to the proposal, certain tasks of the employment and economic development offices, which are state-run agencies, would be transferred to local governments for the duration of the trials. The purpose of these trials is to coordinate central and local government resources, competence and services.

20.3.2020 | The Government has decided on first-hand measures to be taken to secure people’s livelihoods and liquidity of companies in the difficult situation caused by the coronavirus. The Government will implement most of the measures proposed by the labour market organisations, on request of Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen. The livelihoods of entrepreneurs and freelancers will also be secured, regardless of the type of company.

2.6.2022 | On 2 June 2022, the Government proposed a new act on a fixed-term fuel subsidy, which would compensate transport companies for the sudden rise in fuel prices caused by Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February. The subsidy would apply to road transport of goods and passengers.
