30.4.2026 | The European countries participating in Santa Marta express their strong support for the Santa Marta First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels and appreciate the leadership as shown by Colombia and the Netherlands. Santa Marta establishes an action-oriented platform to scale up work and to elevate energy transition. This is critical for addressing the climate emergency.

4.5.2026 | Prime Minister Orpo represented Finland at the eighth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in the Armenian capital of Yerevan on Monday 4 May. The theme of the summit was building the future through unity and stability in Europe.

16.3.2026 | The EU Environment Council will meet in Brussels on Tuesday 17 March. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting. Minister Multala stresses that now it is highly important to defend a consistent climate policy and, in particular, the emissions trading system.

27.1.2026 | Finland and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy cooperation in Beijing on 27 January 2026. The areas of cooperation focus in particular on clean energy, smart energy systems and energy innovation.

19.1.2026 | The International Monetary Fund (IMF) published its annual report on the Finnish economy on Monday 19 January. According to the IMF, efforts to strengthen public finances will have to continue for several years.

15.12.2025 | The EU environment ministers will meet in Brussels on Tuesday 16 December. The ministers will exchange views on the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy published by the Commission on 27 November. The agenda also includes conclusions on the EU’s 8th environment action programme. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting.

13.12.2023 | UN Climate Conference COP28 has ended after having gone into overtime due to challenging negotiations. For the final text a historical agreement was reached concerning fossil fuels, but the chances to meet the 1.5 degree target seem quite fragile. The countries and especially the large economies should take urgent action to meet the target.

22.11.2025 | The Climate Change Conference COP30 in Belém, Brazil ended on Saturday evening Finnish time, after having continued almost 24 hours longer than planned. 6.2.2024 | Finland has received significant research funding of EUR 14 million from the EU to speed up the transition to a clean energy system. The REPower-CEST project will produce a comprehensive analysis of the means of phasing out fossil fuels and prepare a roadmap for implementing the transition in Finland.

15.1.2024 | The mid-term evaluation of the Green Deal on emission-free work sites shows that almost all of the interim targets of the agreement have been reached. Electrification of machinery is a key tool to completely phase out fossil fuels.

20.11.2023 | A high-level conference of the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, will discuss the organisation's vision for cleaner sources of energy, including sustainable and low-carbon aviation fuels, on 20–24 November 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. 

8.11.2023 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched preparations for a national programme for distribution infrastructure for alternative fuels.  

13.6.2025 | The EU’s energy ministers will meet in Luxembourg on 16 June 2025 to discuss the roadmap towards ending Russian energy imports and to approve conclusions on strengthening the energy union by reinforcing energy security. Finland will be represented by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

24.11.2021 | Finland joined the Export Finance for Future coalition (E3F) at its meeting on 24 November 2021. The E3F is part of the strategy work to combat global warming. It allocates funding to sustainable projects and defines the most suitable measures for phasing out export finance in projects that are not in line with sustainable development.

13.3.2025 | The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will visit Finland on 14–15 March on the invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen. This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Finland and the United Arab Emirates.

10.11.2025 | On the opening day of COP30 in Belém, the Nordic Ministers for Fisheries, Aquaculture, Agriculture, Food, and Forestry present a ministerial declaration that underlines the potential of food systems and bioeconomy to address climate change through both mitigation and adaptation.

24.11.2024 | The UN Climate Change Conference COP29 reached an agreement on the new climate finance goal (New Collective Quantified Goal, NCQG) of USD 300 billion and a total NCQG of USD 1,300 billion. Decisions on the global monitoring framework for the process to phase out fossil fuels were left to the future climate conferences.

27.6.2025 | The clean energy transition is progressing at a good pace, thanks in part to the emissions trading system. However, reaching Finland’s climate targets will require more action in the effort sharing sector, and especially in the land use sector where emissions increased compared to the previous year.

31.5.2022 | The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications organised a round table on the green transition in heavy transport on 30 May 2022, to hear the views of various interest groups on the needs of heavy-duty vehicles and heavy transport in general when transport is moving towards a fossil-free era. The discussion also focused on the current situation in the fuel markets, EU legislation related to fuels and vehicles as well as forms of support that promote the green transition in heavy transport.
