27.11.2023 | The EU employment and social affairs ministers will meet in Brussels on 27–28 November to discuss, among other things, the European disability card. Other topics on the agenda include green collective bargaining, the EU action plan against racism, and social investment. Minister of Social Affairs and Health Kaisa Juuso will represent Finland at the meeting. 

20.3.2026 | Finland will receive EUR 17 million from the European Union to strengthen the surveillance of the eastern border and the Gulf of Finland and improve Finland's ability to maintain an up-to-date picture of the situation. With support from the EU Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI), the Finnish Border Guard will acquire unmanned surveillance systems that are resistant to interference with satellite positioning systems (GNSS disruptions).

9.4.2026 | In its meeting on 9 April, the Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy decided that Finland would apply for EUR 35 million in additional funding from the European Commission’s Border Management and Visa Policy Instrument (BMVI). The funding would be used by the Border Guard to procure drone detection and counter-drone systems.

16.12.2021 | Amendments to the Trade Register Act and the Business Information Act will take effect in August next year. The amendments will update the Acts to comply with two EU Directives. Trade register data will move more easily between EU Member States in future. In addition, a electronic trade register extract will become free of charge through a decree amendment.

13.11.2025 | Finland is applying for additional funding for its programme under the EU Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI) to strengthen surveillance at the eastern border and in the Gulf of Finland. Finland is seeking funding of over EUR 16 million from the European Commission, following the Government’s decision on 13 November.

27.10.2025 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen will meet Austria's Federal Minister for the Interior Gerhard Karner on 27 October. The ministers will travel together to Vaalimaa, Finland's eastern border, where they will receive a briefing on the situation at the eastern border, on the progress of the construction of the border fence, and on border arrangements.

5.11.2025 | The meeting of Nordic and Baltic ministers for digitalisation plans to adopt a declaration promoting European Digital Identity Wallets. The meeting is being held in Tampere on 6 November.

27.2.2025 | The process of granting temporary protection will become easier both for the beneficiaries and the authorities. At its session on 27 February, the Government proposed amendments to the Aliens Act and the entry-into-force provision of the Act on Temporarily Amending the Aliens Act. The President of the Republic is to approve the amendments on 28 February.

21.8.2023 | A new era has begun in Finland's foreign and security policy. NATO membership will strengthen not only our security, but also the stability of Northern Europe. Finland's strong defence capability and resilience will strengthen the whole Alliance, says Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen in her speech at the Annual Meeting of Heads of Mission.

4.8.2023 | Summary: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues. As a result of the war, around four million Ukrainians have applied for temporary protection in the Member States of the European Union. Other migration to the EU is also growing. Both the number of asylum applications submitted in the EU and irregular migration to the EU are on the rise. At the moment, migration pressure is concentrated on the Central Mediterranean route from Tunisia and Libya to Italy.

26.9.2024 | Finland is applying for additional funding for its programme under the EU Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI) to strengthen surveillance at the eastern border. Finland is seeking the maximum amount defined by the Commission, EUR 50 million. The Government decided to apply for funding on 26 September 2024.

14.12.2023 | The Government supports the Commission’s proposal to extend the scope of the proposal for a Directive establishing the European Disability Card and the European Parking Card for persons with disabilities to include third-country nationals who are legally residing in the territory of an EU Member State.
