7.5.2026 | On 7 May 2026, the Government submitted for approval amendments to the Act on Transport Services, the Driving Licence Act, the Act on the Organisation of Driver Examinations and the Act on the Enforcement of a Fine. The amendments aim to improve the operating conditions for the transport sector. Most of the acts and the amended decree will enter into force on 15 May 2026.

14.11.2025 | A turning point is expected in Finland’s labour market by the end of 2025. Growth in employment is projected to accelerate in 2027, and unemployment to begin falling more clearly.

21.5.2025 | On 20 May 2025, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed three working groups to prepare the measures agreed by the Government in its mid-term policy review session in spring 2025. The working groups will prepare measures concerning the board-level employee representation, the Act on the Protection of Privacy in Working Life, and the time for taking carried-over holiday entitlement.

Companies must increase their intangible investments to enhance the value added and productivity. Public funding must be used more efficiently to boost new sectors and diversify the economic structure.

22.2.2024 | The Government is to submit a proposal for amendments to industrial peace legislation on 29 February 2024. The reform will enhance the sanctions system for unlawful strikes, limit disproportionate solidarity action and restrict the length of political industrial action.

29.11.2023 | This autumn, the revised Labour Force Barometer focuses on the future prospects of the technology industry and the social welfare, health and wellbeing sectors. The greatest shortage of labour is in the health and social services sector, where skilled workers are needed for the care of older people, in particular. The outlook for the technology sector is expected to improve after next summer.

5.3.2024 | The European Parliament, the Council and the Commission have reached a provisional political agreement on a proposal for a regulation prohibiting products made with forced labour on the Union market. Each EU institution still needs to adopt the regulation in accordance with its own procedures.

26.1.2024 | The proposal for a regulation banning products made with forced labour in the EU market has advanced to trilogues between representatives of the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission. The Regulation is part of a legislative package on responsible business operations.

16.1.2023 | The report contains the results of the Labour Market Roadmap project by occupation and region and proposes solutions to improve the availability of labour. According to the report, that divides occupations into those suffering from labour shortage, mismatch or surplus, the increase in labour market mismatch is largely explained by the growing number of atypical employment relationships. 

12.12.2022 | The labour market roadmap project provides important information about the problems related to the availability of labour. During the project, employers and employees met in eight sectoral groups to consider proposals for improving the situation. According to them, the transfer of labour from surplus occupations to shortage occupations and from one region to another should be speedier and the services for people moving to work in Finland could be improved. 

1.10.2024 | The Ministry of Education and Culture proposes Varkaus ‘a living industrial cultural heritage’ as Finland's nomination for the European Heritage Label.

12.12.2024 | On Thursday 12 December, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo gave a talk about Finland’s climate action at the University of Kyoto. After the talk, students had the opportunity to ask the Prime Minister questions about the topic. Orpo also paid a visit to the Osaka 2025 Expo grounds, where a joint Nordic pavilion is currently being built. Orpo is the first head of state or government to visit the World Expo grounds.

28.6.2024 | The Government and central labour market organisations have negotiated joint equal pay measures for the period 2024–2027. The aim of the Equal Pay Programme is to further reduce the gender pay gap. In addition to the measures set out in the Programme, there are other measures underway to reduce the pay gap.

2.6.2025 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is organising a consultation round from 2 June to 28 July 2025 on legislative amendments to the grounds for fixed-term employment contracts, the duration of the notice period for layoffs and the re-employment obligation of employers. The proposed amendments have been prepared in a tripartite working group that was not unanimous in its work.
