29.6.2026 | According to an international survey by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, trust in public institutions and satisfaction with administrative services have remained stable in Finland. The OECD Survey on Drivers of Trust in Public Institutions, published for the third time, highlights participation and agency as increasingly important drivers of trust.

The project examines different models for organising labour migration through an international comparison, both within the EU and in other key reference countries for Finland. Special attention is given to points-based systems for migrants, as well as to the objectives and impacts of these models.

4.12.2025 | The economy of wellbeing offers tools for policy makers to secure the preconditions for a good life both for the current population and future generations. A new working paper by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) analyses how wellbeing economy practices have been integrated into decision-making in ten countries. This comparison will also help Finland create its own governance model.

The number of news headlines about Finland was lower than the previous year, but President of the Republic Alexander Stubb assumed a significantly more visible role on the international stage. Country brand surveys indicate that Finland’s brand has become more positive, and awareness of Finland has increased since 2024.

11.2.2026 | Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto is pleased with the icebreaker agreement between the United States Coast Guard and the Helsinki shipyard published today. The Coast Guard and the Rauma shipyard announced their agreement already on 29 December 2025. With the agreements, the building of four icebreakers will begin at the shipyards in Helsinki and Rauma.

12.2.2026 | Finland is well on the path towards achieving the nationally set target for research and development (R&D) activities, but the coming years will be highly challenging. This is the conclusion of the Monitoring and Evaluation Report on Government R&D Funding. The report also shows that global competition in innovation keeps getting stronger. In international comparison there is nothing exceptional about Finland’s R&D investments, but they are an absolute necessity to succeed in global competition.

3.6.2022 | For the second year in a row, Finland has taken the top spot in the annual global ranking of sustainable development. The comparison assesses countries’ progress on implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals. Of the 17 goals, Finland has achieved or is close to achieving those related to social sustainability in particular. There are still several goals related to ecological sustainability where Finland has work to do.

14.6.2021 | For the first time, Finland has been ranked number one in an international comparison of sustainable development. The esteemed ranking by the UN and the Bertelsmann Foundation is published annually, and Finland has also been in the top three in earlier years, together with Denmark and Sweden. The comparison assesses countries’ progress on implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals.

22.7.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo led Finland’s delegation to the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 July. The forum took stock of global progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.

23.11.2023 | International recruitments to and candidacies for multilateral organisations, coordinated by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, are an integral part of Finland's foreign and security policy. Multilateral cooperation makes Finland a more influential player globally than its size might suggest. In autumn 2023, several Finnish experts were successfully recruited to leadership positions important for Finland.

12.6.2025 | Nordic Council of Ministers for Fisheries, Aquaculture, Agriculture, Food and Forestry convened at its annual ministerial meeting in Kuopio on 11–12 June 2025. Among the topics discussed were security of supply and opportunities related to the bioeconomy, and the ministers also met young farmers. Ministers from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark as well as the autonomous regions of Åland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland attended the meeting. Iceland was represented by the State Secretary.

The main theme of this year’s edition focuses on tertiary education. The report mainly covers 2020.
