28.8.2025 | The Research and Innovation Council is launching new procedures for monitoring and assessing the use and impact of central government research and development (R&D) funding during autumn 2025. The aim of the new assessment procedures is to produce an up-to-date overall picture of the situation with regard to the allocation, outcomes and impact of R&D funding for use by decision-makers and actors in the RDI system.

16.6.2025 |  Finland will reform and strengthen its health technology assessment (HTA) activities. As part of the reform, the expertise and resources concerning HTA activities will be pooled into a single competence cluster. 

6.6.2024 | The Government has adopted a resolution on the Civil Society Organisations Strategy. With the help of the strategy, the Government will promote independent fund-raising activities by CSOs, develop government grant activities concerning CSOs and dismantle bureaucracy that burdens them.

A new study examines the effectiveness of Finland’s crisis management operations in Afghanistan from various perspectives and presents recommendations on assessing the impact of comprehensive crisis management.

2.2.2026 | The 12th Session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services IPBES will begin in Manchester on 3 February. The session is to approve the Business & Biodiversity Report.

18.12.2024 | The structures and responsibilities for organising employment services will be reformed at the turn of the year. As a result of the reform, the responsibility for organising employment and integration services will be transferred to municipalities and employment areas formed by municipalities. The role of the central government will focus on guidance, development and the nationwide functioning of the employment service system.

30.1.2026 | The new European forest partnership project prepared under the lead of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry progresses. The final Grant Agreement related to the partnership is to be signed by the end of May 2026. The first call for applications for research funding should open in autumn 2026.

10.12.2025 | The wellbeing services county reform is progressing towards the set objectives throughout Finland, but there are still many issues left to address. This is according to a broad-based interim evaluation of the wellbeing services county reform made by an independent expert group.

4.12.2025 | On 4 December 2025, the Government submitted the national Energy and Climate Strategy to Parliament as a report. In line with the Government Programme, the strategy will accelerate the clean transition, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen carbon sinks.

15.2.2024 | The Government has appointed Liisa Räsänen, Master of Social Sciences, as Director General of the State Treasury. Räsänen is currently working as a director in the State Treasury.

28.1.2025 | The working group that examined impact assessment capability in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and its development has completed its work. The working group defined a target state of impact assessment capability and priorities for the development and created a framework for the evaluation and development of impact assessment capability.

31.5.2021 | A new study shows that comprehensive management of climate migration requires the right approach to climate policy and support for adaptation to climate change in the form of humanitarian aid, civilian crisis management, development cooperation, education and research, but also migration policy.

4.7.2025 | The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has launched an extensive package of measures that aims to strengthen forest growth and carbon sinks on a long-term basis. The package is based on the Government Programme and it will contribute to the achievement of the climate targets. The measures have been prepared in close interaction with stakeholders and researchers. Various actors in the forest sector have a key role in the implementation of the measures.

5.6.2023 | The responsibility for awarding government grants for sport science research will transfer from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture to the Academy of Finland. The amendment to Act on the Promotion of Sports and Physical Activity, which entered into force in February 2023, will simplify the application and review process by making it entirely the responsibility of a single organisation. To this end, the Academy of Finland will launch a new Academy Programme for sport science.
