18.9.2025 | Nordic media education authorities studied the media literacy skills of citizens in the Nordic countries and the results of the survey will be published in October. Media literacy was a topic of discussion at a Nordic conference organised by the Ministry of Education and Culture on 18 and 19 September.

1.3.2023 | The reform of continuous learning, launched under the Government Programme, has promoted the opportunities of working-age people to improve their knowledge and skills, and increased the availability of skilled labour. The final report on the reform implementation and on the next steps was submitted on 1 March 2023 to the Members of Parliament who participated in the drafting of the parliamentary policy approaches for continuous learning. 

30.11.2021 | How will climate change and the green transition affect working life and the labour market? What skills will employees need in the future? Finland has drawn attention to the future of work during its Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers. This topic was examined from the perspective of climate change at a conference held in Helsinki on 30 November 2021.

3.12.2020 | The Strategy for Lifelong Guidance aims to improve people’s abilities to make educational and career decisions for themselves and to ensure that they receive the necessary support through multi-channel information, advice and guidance services. The strategy drawn up by the Lifelong Guidance Forum presents strategic objectives for the development of guidance and recommends measures extending to 2023.

10.8.2021 | The COVID-19 pandemic has reversed progress in the global education goals by two decades. The crisis has dropped many children out of school and deteriorated the quality of education. Finnish development cooperation in the education sector tackles the global learning crisis by promoting the quality of education. Particular attention is paid to girls and to children and youth in the most vulnerable position.

17.12.2020 | A group of Members of Parliament have adopted policy approaches for continuous learning that promote the opportunities of working-age people to develop their competence and ensure the availability of skilled labour. Since the reform aims to respond specifically to the competence needs arising from changes in the world of work, education and employment services will be enhanced as a whole.

17.2.2023 | Aalto University and the Ministry of Transport and Communications are implementing the extensive Cyber Citizen Project to create a common model for teaching cybersecurity skills to citizens in the EU Member States. As part of the project, on 17 February 2023 Aalto University published a comprehensive report on the current state of teaching cybersecurity skills to citizens throughout the European Union.

9.5.2023 | This year (9 May 2023–8 May 2024) has been designated as the European Year of Skills. The aim is to encourage working-age people to identify and develop their skills and to help companies find solutions for recruiting skilled labour.

7.6.2022 | The employment and labour ministers from the member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will meet in Paris on 7 June 2022. The meeting will focus on the crisis resilience of the labour market and the ways to strengthen and improve its functioning after crises.

3.2.2021 | The Digivision 2030, a joint project between Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences, will bring greater opportunities for all learners to learn flexibly. The aim is to restructure Finland’s higher education over the next decade by means of digitalisation and to make Finland a model country for flexible learning.

21.2.2022 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has granted EUR 445,000 in discretionary government grants to civil society organisations (CSOs) for their Europe information purposes. In this application round, grants were awarded to 19 CSOs and 22 projects.

27.5.2021 | The Government appointed Dr Minna Kelhä as Director General of the Finnish National Agency for Education. The duration of the position is for five years, beginning on 7 June 2021 and ending on 6 June 2026.

21.5.2021 | Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen will be one of the keynote speakers at Global Leadership Day, organised by AIESEC on 21 May 2021. In her speech, Haatainen will encourage young people to acquire different skills and seize the opportunities offered by the transformation of work. The Minister will also emphasise the importance of mobility for international students and workers.

12.5.2021 | On 12 May 2021, the Government appointed a delegation that will attend the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) International Labour Conference on 3–19 June 2021. The delegation includes representatives of the Government, employers and employees. Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen will speak about the coronavirus pandemic and working life at the plenary session of the Conference.
