4.7.2025 | In its meeting on Friday 4 July, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions on the Commission’s proposal to simplify regulation for businesses and received an update on the preparation of a plan for affordable housing in the EU.

7.10.2021 | The European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control (HEUNI) has published a report that compares measures against the exploitation of migrant labour in different countries. In particular, the report examines multidisciplinary cooperation models developed in Norway, Belgium and the United Kingdom to address labour exploitation.

1.8.2023 | The European Commission has revised the Blue Card, a residence permit for highly skilled workers from outside the EU. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment requests comments on the draft government proposal for transposing the new Blue Card rules into Finnish law. Comments should be submitted by September 12, 2023 on the public consultation website Lausuntopalvelu.fi (available in Finnish and Swedish).

5.6.2025 | On 5 June 2025, the Government issued a decree on sectors with labour shortages in which the holders of residence permits for employed persons may seek work more flexibly. At the same time, the Government wants to facilitate the supply of labour in sectors suffering from labour shortages.

2.12.2021 | Commissioned by the Ministry of Finance, the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control, affiliated with the United Nations (HEUNI), has produced a guide for risk management in national supply chains for public procurement agencies in Finland titled Labour Exploitation and Public Procurement. Public procurement agencies include the central government and municipalities, which are required to comply with the Act on Public Procurement and Concession Contracts.

22.6.2026 | Labour migration models used in different countries were examined in a report by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. A points-based system has been implemented and is being used in different ways in different countries. Introducing such a system in Finland would require the setting of a clear objective.

21.12.2021 | The Sports Ministers of the European Union Iceland and Norway have signed a statement calling for transparency, democracy and respect for human rights in the work of international sport federations.

25.3.2022 | Finland grants temporary protection to those fleeing the war in Ukraine. Those granted temporary protection have the right to work without any restrictions or delay as soon as they have been issued a residence permit and a residence permit card. They can also register as jobseekers at the TE Office and receive employment support services, says an instructional leaflet prepared by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, which will be distributed to people arriving at Finland’s borders. 

1.9.2022 | The measures taken in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will support socially, economically and ecologically sustainable economic growth. Combating climate change, utilising all available labour input and boosting productivity growth are key objectives in the administrative branch.

10.12.2021 | The EU Foreign Ministers will meet in Brussels on Monday 13 December. State Secretary Johanna Sumuvuori will represent Finland at the meeting. The Foreign Affairs Council will focus on EU-Africa relations, Central Asia and Venezuela. During a working lunch, ministers will have an informal exchange with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar.

2.5.2022 | Nepal is preparing for graduation from the least developed country (LDC) category in 2026. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs commissioned a study for an analysis of the changing relationship between Finland and Nepal, because the cooperation will expand and partnerships will diversify after the transition.

13.9.2023 | Strengthening the labour market and international recruitment requires that proactive and effective measures are taken to tackle abuse in the labour market. In order to meet the objectives of the Government Programme, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will prepare an action plan to prevent and combat exploitation by the end of 2023.

27.9.2021 | The 2022 budget proposal envisages a total of some EUR 1,566 million for the main title of the Ministry of the Interior. This total includes EUR 856 million for policing, some EUR 280 million for the Finnish Border Guard, EUR 87 million for rescue services and the Emergency Response Centre Administration, and EUR 160 million for immigration.
