15.4.2026 | Kuopion Energia Oy has submitted to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment an environmental impact assessment (EIA) programme concerning its plan to build a small nuclear power plant in Kuopio for district heating production. The EIA programme is a plan prepared by the party responsible for the project that details the necessary analyses and organisation of the environmental impact assessment procedure.

13.12.2024 | The EU Ministers responsible for energy issues will convene in Brussels on 16 December 2024. They will discuss the Council conclusions on the promotion of geothermal energy and the future of EU’s energy policy. 13.3.2025 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has adopted the financial statement of the National Nuclear Waste Management Fund for 2024 and decided on the recognition of the profit of the Fund as revenue. The Fund consists of two separate funds, the Financial Provision Fund and the Research Fund for Nuclear Energy Expertise.

13.6.2025 | In its meeting on Friday 13 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions on the Commission’s plans to phase out energy imports from Russia, the Commission’s communication on artificial intelligence and its proposal regarding the Asylum Procedure Regulation. The Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs also discussed the EU–Mercosur Association Agreement.

11.4.2024 | Nuclear energy is produced for good reasons. In the early days of January, the coldest winter conditions for decades raised electricity consumption in Finland to a maximum of 15 gigawatts, which is the biggest quantity for nearly a decade. There was indeed demand for electricity produced with nuclear energy. The more challenging energy market situation has increased support for the use of nuclear energy across Europe.
