30.6.2025 | On 30 June, Finland brought an action against the European Commission before the Court of Justice of the European Union. 28.11.2025 | Finnish Biodiversity Award 2023–2024 was given to an actor that had done something inspiring to halt biodiversity loss. The winner of the competition was Crowdsorsa mobile game that has already helped fight against invasive alien species in Finland on a total of 4 million square metres. Honourable mentions were awarded to the cities of Kauniainen and Vantaa. 17.11.2022 | The government proposal to ban salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki (Tana) in 2023 was submitted to Parliament at the government plenary session on Thursday 17 November 2022. 10.6.2022 | The ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki entered into force on 10 June 2022, when the President of the Republic approved the act concerning the ban. 12.8.2025 | The Siikajoki Vapaaksi environmental association is set to restore the Pöyrynkoski rapids, enabling the free ascent of migratory fish in the river. The project was formally launched on Tuesday 12 August at Revonlahti School in Siikajoki, North Ostrobothnia. 6.6.2022 | The dates for the approval of the ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki have now been set. The second reading in Parliament is on Tuesday 7 June and, if the bill is passed, the President of the Republic will approve the Act on Friday 10 June. 1.6.2022 | Parliament adopted the proposal for the act on a temporary ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki in the second reading on 31 May. In the Government proposal given in April it was assumed that the act could enter into force on 1 June. 23.7.2019 | The Government is participating in a development project to cease hydroelectric power production on the River Hiitolanjoki and restore the rapids on the Finnish side of the river. The River Hiitolanjoki, which flows into Lake Ladoga, is the only river in Finland with a native population of landlocked Atlantic salmon. 30.11.2021 | Under the migratory fish programme NOUSU led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the State of Finland contributes to the restoration of the Virtaankoski Rapid in the River Tainionvirta that discharges into Päijänne, the second largest lake in Finland.
