30.6.2025 | On 30 June, Finland brought an action against the European Commission before the Court of Justice of the European Union. In its action, Finland calls on the Court of Justice to repeal Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/864, which reduced the Atlantic salmon fishing quota allocated to Finland in 2025 due to overfishing in 2024.

28.11.2025 | Finnish Biodiversity Award 2023–2024 was given to an actor that had done something inspiring to halt biodiversity loss. The winner of the competition was Crowdsorsa mobile game that has already helped fight against invasive alien species in Finland on a total of 4 million square metres. Honourable mentions were awarded to the cities of Kauniainen and Vantaa. The prizes were awarded by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

17.11.2022 | The government proposal to ban salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki (Tana) in 2023 was submitted to Parliament at the government plenary session on Thursday 17 November 2022. Salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki is to be prohibited in order to enable the recovery of the salmon stocks.

10.6.2022 | The ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki entered into force on 10 June 2022, when the President of the Republic approved the act concerning the ban. According to the act, salmon is fully protected and fishing gear intended for salmon fishing is prohibited until the end of the year.

12.8.2025 | The Siikajoki Vapaaksi environmental association is set to restore the Pöyrynkoski rapids, enabling the free ascent of migratory fish in the river. The project was formally launched on Tuesday 12 August at Revonlahti School in Siikajoki, North Ostrobothnia. Formally conveying favourable greetings to the event, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah noted that the project was a superb example of a remediation exercise promoted by local parties and prepared in broad partnership.

6.6.2022 | The dates for the approval of the ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki have now been set. The second reading in Parliament is on Tuesday 7 June and, if the bill is passed, the President of the Republic will approve the Act on Friday 10 June. The ban on salmon fishing would enter into force immediately.

1.6.2022 | Parliament adopted the proposal for the act on a temporary ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki in the second reading on 31 May. In the Government proposal given in April it was assumed that the act could enter into force on 1 June. Now it seems, however, that the act will not enter into force until on 7 June.

23.7.2019 | The Government is participating in a development project to cease hydroelectric power production on the River Hiitolanjoki and restore the rapids on the Finnish side of the river. The River Hiitolanjoki, which flows into Lake Ladoga, is the only river in Finland with a native population of landlocked Atlantic salmon. In addition to Ladoga salmon, the river is also home to trout that grow to a considerable size.

25.5.2022 | On Wednesday 25 May 2022, the Government adopted the Government Decree concerning the tributaries of the River Tenojoki (Tanaelva). The decree supplements the other fishing regulations for the Tenojoki river basin for 2022.

16.12.2021 | On 16 December 2021, the Government has granted EUR 4 million for the abrupt structural change situation in Jämsä and EUR 300,000 for the situation in Utsjoki. The funding will support the sustainable growth and vitality of the regions.

30.11.2021 | Under the migratory fish programme NOUSU led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the State of Finland contributes to the restoration of the Virtaankoski Rapid in the River Tainionvirta that discharges into Päijänne, the second largest lake in Finland. The regulating dam of the small-scale hydropower plant will be demolished to free the river. The company that owns the power plant will be transferred to Hiitolanjoki Voima Oy at the beginning of 2022.

9.1.2019 | In connection with an export promotion visit by the Finnish Food Authority and Permanent Secretary Jaana Husu-Kallio from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, China has granted its first export licence for Finnish fish products. The export authorisation granted by the Chinese authorities is specific to certain establishments, and it currently applies to one Finnish fish product manufacturer.

29.5.2020 | Enligt Internationella havsforskningsrådet (ICES) har mängden lax som fångats olagligt i Östersjön rasat. Orsaken därtill är det förbud mot fiske av havsöring som Finland drev igenom i Europeiska unionens råd för fiske. Tidigare fångade man upp till 40 000 laxar i Östersjöns centralbassäng och rapporterade dem som havsöring.

27.11.2025 | Pääministeri Petteri Orpo vieraili Etelä-Afrikassa 26.–27. marraskuuta. Pääministeri Orpo keskusteli Pretoriassa Etelä-Afrikan varapresidentti Paul Mashatilen kanssa. Kyseessä oli ensimmäinen kerta, kun Suomen pääministeri vieraili Pretoriassa, joka on Etelä-Afrikan hallinnollinen pääkaupunki. Matkan keskeinen tarkoitus oli edistää Suomen ja Etelä-Afrikan välisiä kaupallis-taloudellisia suhteita ja pääministerillä oli myös vienninedistämiseen liittyviä tapaamisia.
