16.4.2026 | A Finnish-led project has applied for EUR 9.55 million in European Commission funding to reinforce subsea cable repair capacity. The project is coordinated by the Finnish National Emergency Supply Agency and involves partners from Finland, Sweden and Estonia. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the proposal on 16 April 2026.

22.11.2024 | On Friday 22 November, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the recent damage to undersea telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea. The National Bureau of Investigation is investigating the matter in Finland and engaging in international cooperation. It is still too early to assess the cause of the damage. The damage does not affect network traffic or Finland’s security of supply.

27.12.2024 | On Friday 27 December, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy received a briefing on the damage to cables in the Baltic Sea on Christmas Day. 

21.11.2025 | The European Commission has selected communications projects to receive funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). In the fourth round of calls for proposals under the CEF Digital programme, five projects coordinated by Finnish operators received a total of around EUR 4.67 million in funding. In addition, funding was awarded to a Swedish submarine cable project that is partly placed in Finland.

30.6.2025 | The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) met in London from 18 to 27 June 2025 for their 110th session.

4.2.2025 | The EU leaders discussed ways to strengthen Europe’s collective defence at their informal retreat in Brussels on Monday 3 February. The discussions, which continued late into the evening, also focused on EU-US relations, support for Ukraine and defence cooperation with key partners. According to Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, who represented Finland at the meeting, the exchange of views was very useful.

30.1.2025 | Finnish operators apply for a total of EUR 13.76 million in funding from the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for seven communications projects. In addition, four Swedish projects are partly placed in Finland. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 30 January 2025.

30.1.2025 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Warsaw in Poland on 30 January for an informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. They will discuss current challenges and threats to EU internal security as well as migration management, among other topics. State Secretary Antti Salminen will represent Finland at the meeting in place of Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen, who is unable to attend for reasons of illness.

6.11.2023 | The Russian salvage vessel Spasatel KarevKarev began to repair Rostelecom’s Baltika telecommunications cable in the Gulf of Finland on 6 November. The company has negotiated with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment concerning the repair of the faulty cable, which is partly located in Finland’s exclusive economic zone.

15.1.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo cultivated political and economic relations between Finland and the United Arab Emirates during a working visit on 13–15 January. The programme for his visit included meetings with the President and Prime Minister of the UAE and with several ministers. His visit also coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Finland and the UAE. Prime Minister Orpo was accompanied on the visit by a business delegation put together by Business Finland.

20.8.2024 | In October 2023, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed a working group to examine ways to improve Finland’s competitive position in offshore wind power production compared with other Baltic Sea countries and to promote other targets on offshore wind power set out in the Government Programme. The proposals included in the report published by the working group on 20 August 2024 form an action plan for the promotion of offshore wind power.

6.12.2023 | The telecommunications ministers of Finland, Estonia and Sweden stress that the resilience of critical underwater infrastructure is now more important than ever. The ministers underlined the importance of resilient infrastructure at the Telecommunications Council in Brussels 5 December 2023.

14.9.2022 | The Rural Village Water Resources Management Project in the Far West region of Nepal ends this autumn. It succeeded in its goal of reducing poverty. In addition to improving access to water, the development cooperation project promoted livelihoods and rural business development.

30.10.2023 | Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Anders Adlercreutz visited Tallinn on Monday 30 October at the invitation of Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna. Topics on the agenda included the future of EU enlargement, developing the Union's resilience and preparedness and preparing the next EU Strategic Agenda for 2024–2029.

4.3.2025 | Denmark's new Minister for Resilience and Preparedness Torsten Schack Pedersen and Finland's Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen met in Helsinki on 4 March. The ministers discussed current issues related to preparedness and signed a letter of intent on civil preparedness and resilience.

20.2.2025 | The Czech Republic's Minister of the Interior Vít Rakušan will visit Finland between 19 and 21 February. Minister Rakušan will meet Finland's Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen and travel with her to Vaalimaa border crossing point, where the ministers will be hosted by the Southeast Finland Border Guard District. The topics on their agenda will include discussions on Finland's action to combat the instrumentalisation of migrants.
