22.12.2025 | On 22 December 2025, the Government issued a decree under which regional transport subsidies will continue in 2026‒2028. The subsidy will remain largely the same as before.

28.1.2026 | On 28 January 2026, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published an interim review of the project on security and new economic growth from communication networks, known as the TUUTTI project. The review outlines the project’s progress and presents the key findings to date.

14.11.2025 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet in Brussels on Monday 17 November. The main themes of the meeting will be the EU’s next multiannual financial framework, the annual rule of law dialogue and preparations for the December European Council. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the meeting.

3.7.2025 | The European Commission has awarded EUR 91.01 million under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to nine projects in Finland. Of this, around EUR 59.60 million will go to government initiatives.

27.6.2025 | On 27 June 2025, the President of the Republic approved temporary amendments to the Act on Transport Services, which will enter into force on 1 July 2025. The purpose is to bring data on publicly supported passenger transport services in Northern Finland into one place.

14.6.2021 | At their meeting in Oulu, Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen and Spanish State Secretary for the European Union Juan González-Barba Pera discussed the special characteristics and development of sparsely populated areas. The programme for the meeting also highlighted the 6G flagship, which focuses on developing wireless network technologies, Oulu’s innovation expertise and the city’s cultural contribution as a future European Capital of Culture.

13.3.2024 | On 13 March 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published the results of a survey on the future need for broadband aid. The survey assesses previous broadband aid schemes, the current state of the markets and any need for a new aid scheme.

10.12.2024 | The Finnish model for leisure activities offers children and young people free extra-curricular activities as part of their school day. The clubs already reach around one in four students attending comprehensive schools in Finland. The model not only increases children's and young people's engagement in leisure activities, but also improves opportunities for those who have found it difficult to pursue activities, especially if they come from low-income or one-parent families.

25.1.2024 | As of 2025, municipalities will be required to offer multilingual civic orientation to integration clients. A report commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment in May 2023 includes recommendations on how to implement the orientation in a high-quality and uniform manner across Finland.

19.12.2024 | Finland’s Central Government and other operators are applying for a total of approximately EUR 73.36 million in financial support for 11 transport projects from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport. In addition, EU funding is being sought for the acquisition of a new icebreaker. The Ministerial Finance Committee decided in favour of the applications on 19 December 2024.

Regional transport subsidy will reduce the freight costs caused by long transport distances of products manufactured by SMEs operating in sparsely populated areas. This will improve the competitiveness of companies and support their business activities.

The Council will exchange views on the implementation of the EU’s regional and structural policy and approve conclusions on the future of cohesion policy. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Anders Adlercreutz will represent Finland at the meeting.

8.2.2023 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has called for comments on a draft Government Decree on discretionary government grants for communications and news media in 2023. The decree is scheduled to take effect in April. Total funding of EUR 7 million is proposed.

9.2.2023 | Finland has around 50,500 civil defence shelters with space for about 4.8 million people. Finland has a sufficient number of places in shelters. Civil defence shelters are located in large cities in particular. The highest number of places in civil defence shelters in relation to the population can be found in the Greater Helsinki area and Pirkanmaa. This is evident in the preliminary data of the Ministry of the Interior’s report.

The Council will exchange views on the eighth Cohesion Report, entitled ‘Cohesion in Europe towards 2050’, and adopt Council conclusions on it. Vesa Vuorenkoski, State Secretary to Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen, will represent Finland at the meeting.

8.12.2022 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications submitted a report to Parliament on 8 December 2022 concerning the longer-term impacts of the Transport Services Act. The report finds that the Act is meeting the needs for change arising from the change in transport sector.
