22.4.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2027–2030. Both the global economy and Finland’s finances are facing challenges. In its spending limits session, the Government focused on new targeted measures to strengthen people’s confidence in the future and improve the conditions for growth and employment.

30.4.2026 | Economic recovery in Finland will be further delayed as a result of the crisis in the Middle East. The general government deficit will widen and remain large according to the Economic Forecast published by the Ministry of Finance on 30 April.

30.4.2026 | The General Government Fiscal Plan guides the planning of public finances. It covers central government, wellbeing services counties, municipalities, statutory earnings-related pension funds and other social security funds.

5.12.2025 | The Government has decided to set up a fixed-term state aid scheme for data centres. The Government will also launch a cross-administrative legislative project to establish a register of data centres and lay down the related obligations. These decisions were made by the Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy in its Friday 5 December meeting, where the committee also decided that the security authorities would explore the security aspects related to data centres.

19.1.2026 | The International Monetary Fund (IMF) published its annual report on the Finnish economy on Monday 19 January. According to the IMF, efforts to strengthen public finances will have to continue for several years.

6.3.2025 | On 6 March 2025, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) delivered a decision on cases concerning additional tax on pension income. The ECtHR unanimously held that there had been no violation of Article 14 (prohibition of discrimination) of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and Article 1 of Protocol No. 12 (general prohibition of discrimination) to the Convention. The ECtHR declared the complaint under Article 13 (right to an effective remedy) of the Convention inadmissible.

28.6.2024 | On 24 June, the Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy decided that the Ministry of Finance would continue preparing a tax subsidy for large industrial investments that promote the clean transition. This tax subsidy would accelerate investments in the green transition.

8.11.2024 | The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recommends further adjustments to public finances and continued structural reforms for Finland. The IMF published its statement on the Finnish economy on Friday 8 November.

28.2.2025 | The final report of the Room for Growth project led by CEO Risto Murto contains 41 proposals for boosting economic growth and finding new ways to do business. The most important proposals have to do with supporting renewal in the business sector.

20.12.2023 | A new evaluation commissioned by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs shows that Finland’s support has strengthened tax administrations and expanded tax bases of developing countries. This has increased the countries’ national public funding, which reduces their dependence on external aid.

9.1.2025 | A public online survey inviting proposals for boosting economic growth, part of the Room for Growth project launched by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, has attracted a lot of interest. Over five hundred organisations and private individuals submitted more than seven hundred responses in four weeks.

30.6.2025 | The United Nations’ fourth International Conference on Financing for Development will take place in Seville, Spain, from 30 June to 3 July. The aim of the conference is to reform the international financial architecture for development cooperation and accelerate funding for sustainable development. Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will represent Finland at the conference.

19.6.2024 | In its meeting on Wednesday 19 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed the progress of Finland’s efforts to influence EU policy and ways to increase the number of Finns working in EU institutions. The Ministerial Committee also discussed the Union’s enlargement prospects and outlined Finland’s positions for upcoming meetings.
