5.11.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft spectrum decree and the draft call for applications on network licences for terrestrial television. Statements on the draft spectrum decree can be submitted until 26 November 2025 and on the draft call for applications on network licences for terrestrial television until 10 December 2025.

15.1.2026 | Veikkaus Oy’s monopoly on running gambling games will end. Under the new Gambling Act, the running of betting games, online slot and casino games, and online money bingo will be opened to competition under a licensing system. In its session on 15 January, the Government proposed that the President of the Republic approve the Gambling Act on 16 January. Most provisions of the new act will enter into force on 1 July 2027. 

25.2.2026 | Security policy topics, which have dominated international coverage on Finland since 2022, continued as the key theme in 2025. The number of news headlines about Finland was lower than the previous year, but President of the Republic Alexander Stubb assumed a significantly more visible role on the international stage. Country brand surveys indicate that Finland’s brand has become more positive, and awareness of Finland has increased since 2024.

13.6.2025 | The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs has appointed Elna Nykänen Andersson to serve as Counsellor for Public Diplomacy and Communications at Finland’s Embassy in Tokyo. The three-year term will start on 1 September 2025. The Counsellor for Public Diplomacy and Communications is in charge of the Embassy’s country brand work, external communications and media relations, and leads the Embassy’s country brand team.

27.6.2025 | On 27 June 2025, the President of the Republic approved amendments to the Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle. The amendments will implement the legislative changes outlined by the parliamentary working group on Yle. They also incorporate the criteria and procedures for the appointment and dismissal of the management of public service media providers required by the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). The legislative amendments will enter into force on 8 August 2025.

19.12.2024 | The President of the Republic approved the amendment to the Act on the State Television and Radio Fund on 29 December 2024. It is to enter into force on 1 January 2025. The amendment will freeze the annual index increases to funding of the Finnish Broadcasting Company, YLE. The amendment implements the policies of the parliamentary YLE working group.

31.10.2024 | On 31 October 2024, the Government submitted to Parliament a legislative proposal to amend the Act on the State Television and Radio Fund. The amendment would freeze the annual index increases to funding of the Finnish Broadcasting Company, YLE. The proposal implements the policies of the parliamentary YLE working group.

25.3.2020 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched a legislative project to postpone the start of the subtitling obligation for live television broadcasts until 1 January 2021. On 25 March 2020, the Ministry sent a draft decree on the matter for comments.

27.6.2024 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve the amendments to the Act on Electronic Communication Services and that the Act enter into force on 1 July 2024. The must-carry obligation for radio programmes would be removed from the Act, the provision on the revocation of radio licences would be amended and other technical amendments would be made. After a one-year transition period, the must-carry obligation for radio would end on 1 July 2025.

25.3.2020 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched a legislative project to postpone the start of the subtitling obligation for live television broadcasts until 1 January 2021. On 25 March 2020, the Ministry sent a draft decree on the matter for comments.

21.2.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications invites comments on the government proposal for amending the Act on Electronic Communication Services. The must-carry obligation to transfer radio programmes would be removed from the act. The deadline for submitting comments is 15 March 2024.

16.8.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has launched a legislative project to amend the Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Yle.

25.8.2023 | The peace projects launched by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Iraq and Somalia have brought together people, and especially young people, who share an interest in the challenges facing the country and society, and in peace building. Millions of viewers have been reached through social media and television over the four years of projects.

The proposal will not be submitted to Parliament during this government term, but its preparation will continue in the working group of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

12.7.2023 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has appointed Markus Hippi as Press Counsellor in London from 11 July 2023 to 31 July 2026.

27.10.2023 | Minister of Science and Culture Sari Multala will visit New York and Los Angeles from 30 October to 3 November 2023. Her aim is to deepen cooperation between Finland and the United States in culture, science and the creative sectors. Multala will meet with leaders of local cultural institutions and businesses, visit several universities, and talk to people playing key roles in culture, science and higher education.

A legislative project decision was also issued with a view to amending the provisions of the Information Society Code (917/2014) governing the must carry obligation for radio programming.
