15.1.2026 | Veikkaus Oy’s monopoly on running gambling games will end. Under the new Gambling Act, the running of betting games, online slot and casino games, and online money bingo will be opened to competition under a licensing system. In its session on 15 January, the Government proposed that the President of the Republic approve the Gambling Act on 16 January. 13.6.2025 | The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs has appointed Elna Nykänen Andersson to serve as Counsellor for Public Diplomacy and Communications at Finland’s Embassy in Tokyo. The three-year term will start on 1 September 2025. 27.6.2025 | On 27 June 2025, the President of the Republic approved amendments to the Act on the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle. The amendments will implement the legislative changes outlined by the parliamentary working group on Yle. They also incorporate the criteria and procedures for the appointment and dismissal of the management of public service media providers required by the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). 19.12.2024 | The President of the Republic approved the amendment to the Act on the State Television and Radio Fund on 29 December 2024. It is to enter into force on 1 January 2025. The amendment will freeze the annual index increases to funding of the Finnish Broadcasting Company, YLE. 31.10.2024 | On 31 October 2024, the Government submitted to Parliament a legislative proposal to amend the Act on the State Television and Radio Fund. The amendment would freeze the annual index increases to funding of the Finnish Broadcasting Company, YLE. The must-carry obligation for radio programmes would be removed from the Act, the provision on the revocation of radio licences would be amended and other technical amendments would be made.
