12.6.2025 | In 2024, the total demand for travel and tourism was EUR 16.6 billion. The strategy aims to increase tourism demand to EUR 20 billion by 2028. A key to achieving this target is doubling the amount of money foreign tourists spend in Finland, compared with 2019. Growth in tourism demand must create value for travel companies, employees in the sector, local communities, tourists and Finnish society.

25.2.2026 | Security policy topics, which have dominated international coverage on Finland since 2022, continued as the key theme in 2025. The number of news headlines about Finland was lower than the previous year, but President of the Republic Alexander Stubb assumed a significantly more visible role on the international stage. Country brand surveys indicate that Finland’s brand has become more positive, and awareness of Finland has increased since 2024.

10.12.2025 | A new OECD report, prepared at the request of the European Commission, sets out a roadmap to strengthen resilience, competitiveness and security in Finland’s eastern border regions. The report was launched in Helsinki on 10 December.

13.6.2025 | On 13 June 2025, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Business Finland signed an agreement specifying the key practical arrangements for transferring Business Finland's foreign functions to the Foreign Service and the functions to be transferred. The transfer will take place at the beginning of 2026.

27.1.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is in China for an official visit from 24 to 29 January. On Tuesday 27 January, Prime Minister Orpo met for separate discussions with President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji. In all three discussions, Prime Minister Orpo highlighted Finland’s and Europe’s support for Ukraine, EU-China relations and a variety of bilateral issues, including increasing Finland’s exports to China.

30.11.2023 | Over the past decade, Finland has improved its ranking in the Anholt-Ipsos Nation Brands Index study from 18th to 15th place. The study of people’s images of 60 countries shows that Finland is on the rise, especially as a country to live in or visit.

13.6.2023 | The significance of domestic tourism increased during the COVID-19 pandemic in all of the Nordic countries. Taking the domestic market better into consideration strengthens the resilience and flexibility of the tourism industry, according to the report “Exploring Domestic Tourism in the Nordics”, which was published on 13 June 2023 and sheds light on the current situation and future outlook of domestic tourism in the Nordic countries.

25.11.2025 | Three separate studies examine the development of nature value markets from the perspectives of sellers who generate nature values, buyers and intermediary organisations. According to the studies, nature value markets are an important means of increasing private funding for nature action, but their large-scale establishment requires clear rules and additional incentives.

16.12.2022 | Development projects promoting the recovery of tourism industry in the regions have supported the capacity of regions to cope with the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. In spring 2022, the Regional Council of Southwest Finland, the Regional Council of South Savo and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment launched an external evaluation, which examined the implementation of the projects and the impacts of funding. Owal Group Oy conducted the evaluation.

1.9.2021 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has appointed a High-Level Working Group on Tourism, which will serve as an expert advisory body on strategy related to tourism development. The High-Level Working Group will promote the implementation of Finland’s tourism strategy for 2019–2028. It will also monitor and assess the sector’s operating environment and current phenomena and support the preparation of tourism policy measures.

12.8.2025 | The Siikajoki Vapaaksi environmental association is set to restore the Pöyrynkoski rapids, enabling the free ascent of migratory fish in the river. The project was formally launched on Tuesday 12 August at Revonlahti School in Siikajoki, North Ostrobothnia. Formally conveying favourable greetings to the event, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah noted that the project was a superb example of a remediation exercise promoted by local parties and prepared in broad partnership.

25.9.2020 | In their video conference on 28 September 2020, EU tourism ministers will discuss ways of promoting the recovery of tourism from the coronavirus pandemic. State Secretary Kimmo Tiilikainen will represent Finland at the meeting on behalf of Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä.

11.3.2025 | The webinar series of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization FAO that started on Tuesday 11 March is part of a global initiative aimed to develop forest-based bioeconomy worldwide. At the opening of the series, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah stressed the role of multilateral cooperation as we move towards sustainable forest-based bioeconomy.

8.10.2019 | Tourism experts from EU Member States and key stakeholders will meet at the European Tourism Forum in Helsinki on 9–10 October to exchange views on digital transformation in the tourism sector.

22.1.2025 | European Commission Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms Raffaele Fitto will visit Finland on 22–24 January at the invitation of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. Topics on the agenda for the visit include the EU’s next multiannual financial framework, the situation at Finland’s eastern border with Russia and the reform of EU cohesion policy.
