22.4.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2027–2030. Both the global economy and Finland’s finances are facing challenges. In its spending limits session, the Government focused on new targeted measures to strengthen people’s confidence in the future and improve the conditions for growth and employment.

13.3.2025 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has adopted the financial statement of the National Nuclear Waste Management Fund for 2024 and decided on the recognition of the profit of the Fund as revenue. The Fund consists of two separate funds, the Financial Provision Fund and the Research Fund for Nuclear Energy Expertise.

29.8.2024 | On 29 August 2024, the Government appointed a new Board for the National Nuclear Waste Management Fund for the term of 1 September 2024–31 August 2027. The chair of the new Board will be Chief Risk Officer Jarkko Heikkilä from the Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company.

4.12.2025 | Finland is on the path to achieving the emission reduction targets for the effort-sharing sector for the period 2021–2030, set jointly in the EU. On 4 December 2025, the Government gave a Report to Parliament on the Medium-Term Climate Plan that sets out the measures to boost emission reductions.

15.12.2025 | The EU environment ministers will meet in Brussels on Tuesday 16 December. The ministers will exchange views on the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy published by the Commission on 27 November. The agenda also includes conclusions on the EU’s 8th environment action programme. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting.

8.12.2025 | The seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly UNEA, the world’s highest-level decision-making body for matters related to the environment, will take place in Nairobi, Kenya from 8 to 12 December 2025. The theme of the session is ‘Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet’. Finland’s UNEA delegation in Nairobi will be led by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

26.6.2025 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has sent out for comments the draft of the new Nuclear Energy Act. Primarily, the new act aims to ensure that the use of nuclear energy is in line with the overall good of society, that the operations are safe and that nuclear waste generated in Finland is handled properly.

5.8.2025 | Representatives of UN Member States will negotiate on the Global Plastics Treaty in Geneva, Switzerland on 5–14 August. The negotiation situation is very challenging, and there is also an increasing political pressure to reach an agreement. The demanding foreign policy situation has also made the negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty more difficult.

4.11.2025 | On 3 November 2025, the European Commission announced that 61 projects had been selected for funding under the latest Innovation Fund call for net-zero technologies. The projects will receive a total of EUR 2.9 billion in support. Five Finnish projects are among those selected: NotNukeOne, SCOOP, MAGHYC, NEXT HYDROMET and SB-VARKAUS.

16.6.2025 | The EU Environment Council will meet in Luxembourg on Tuesday 17 June. At the Council, the ministers will exchange views on the preparations for the UN Climate Conference (COP30) to be held in Belém, Brazil. The aim is also to reach a common approach, i.e. the position of the Member States, concerning the Regulation on circularity requirements for vehicle design and on management of end-of-life vehicles. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting.

2.7.2025 | The Ministry of the Environment requests comments on the draft Medium-term Climate Plan. The plan sets out the emissions reduction measures to be implemented in the effort sharing sector. Comments may be submitted from 2 July until 20 August 2025.

13.6.2025 | In its meeting on Friday 13 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions on the Commission’s plans to phase out energy imports from Russia, the Commission’s communication on artificial intelligence and its proposal regarding the Asylum Procedure Regulation. The Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs also discussed the EU–Mercosur Association Agreement.

22.11.2024 | Pressures to reach an understanding will be mounting when the representatives of the UN Member States convene in Busan, Republic of Korea, on 25 November–1 December for the last scheduled negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty. Finland’s Chief Negotiator Tuulia Toikka from the Ministry of the Environment expects that the negotiations will be challenging.

12.11.2019 | The legislation on the delivery of waste from ships to ports will be updated. The aim is to improve the treatment and reception of waste in ports, which will reduce the generation of marine litter and, in particular, the discharge of plastic into the seas.

29.1.2019 | The Finnish research programme on Nuclear Waste Management, KYT2018, is at the end of its four-year term. The final seminar on 29 January 2019 at Finlandia Hall in Helsinki presents the achievements of the programme and considers how national nuclear waste research best supports the safe use of nuclear energy in Finland.

5.12.2024 | On 5 December 2024, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment received an environmental impact assessment (EIA) report from Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO). The report assesses the environmental effects of a potential extension to the service life of Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 nuclear power plant units as well as an increase to their thermal power.

18.11.2024 | Finland and the United Kingdom will intensify their cooperation in a broad range of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The countries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim to establish structures for collaboration concerning nuclear energy projects, programmes, research and development, and policies.
