25.2.2026 | Security policy topics, which have dominated international coverage on Finland since 2022, continued as the key theme in 2025. The number of news headlines about Finland was lower than the previous year, but President of the Republic Alexander Stubb assumed a significantly more visible role on the international stage. Country brand surveys indicate that Finland’s brand has become more positive, and awareness of Finland has increased since 2024.

27.1.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is in China for an official visit from 24 to 29 January. On Tuesday 27 January, Prime Minister Orpo met for separate discussions with President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji. In all three discussions, Prime Minister Orpo highlighted Finland’s and Europe’s support for Ukraine, EU-China relations and a variety of bilateral issues, including increasing Finland’s exports to China.

30.11.2023 | Over the past decade, Finland has improved its ranking in the Anholt-Ipsos Nation Brands Index study from 18th to 15th place. The study of people’s images of 60 countries shows that Finland is on the rise, especially as a country to live in or visit.

16.12.2022 | Development projects promoting the recovery of tourism industry in the regions have supported the capacity of regions to cope with the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. In spring 2022, the Regional Council of Southwest Finland, the Regional Council of South Savo and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment launched an external evaluation, which examined the implementation of the projects and the impacts of funding. Owal Group Oy conducted the evaluation.

25.11.2025 | Three separate studies examine the development of nature value markets from the perspectives of sellers who generate nature values, buyers and intermediary organisations. According to the studies, nature value markets are an important means of increasing private funding for nature action, but their large-scale establishment requires clear rules and additional incentives.

1.9.2021 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has appointed a High-Level Working Group on Tourism, which will serve as an expert advisory body on strategy related to tourism development. The High-Level Working Group will promote the implementation of Finland’s tourism strategy for 2019–2028. It will also monitor and assess the sector’s operating environment and current phenomena and support the preparation of tourism policy measures.

21.3.2025 | Work to ensure the security of supply and growth in food exports and the forest-based bioeconomy is making good progress. A growth package of EUR 10 million was introduced last spring, and EUR 5.7 million of this will be targeted to promoting food exports and developing value chains in the food sector in 2025.

3.9.2024 | The Governments of Finland and Sweden will hold a joint session in Stockholm on 16 September. The purpose of the meeting is to further deepen cooperation between the two countries. After the joint session, each minister will take part in a separate programme with their counterpart, including visits to sites of importance for their respective areas of responsibility. The two prime ministers will attend a seminar organised by the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise in the afternoon.

8.12.2021 | The demand for natural products is expected to grow globally. Natural raw materials are expected to generate significant business activities because their economic potential has not yet been fully realised.

10.10.2024 | The amendments aim to safeguard a sufficient level of income for foreign pickers and improve monitoring to ensure the rights of pickers are realised. The wild berry sector will be brought into line with other sectors requiring seasonal labour.

26.6.2024 | In May 2024, the Government outlined that the picking of wild berries is an activity based primarily on seasonal work in an employment relationship. The aim is to safeguard a sufficient level of income for foreign pickers and to improve monitoring to ensure the rights of pickers are realised. The sector will be brought into line with other sectors requiring seasonal labour.

9.11.2023 | The Government has decided to grant Kymenlaakso a total of EUR 6 million to mitigate the impact of sudden structural change. The region is looking for new growth in the battery and food sectors, in particular. In all, the development package for Kymenlaakso amounts to ca. EUR 9 million.

8.2.2023 | Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari will visit New Delhi and Mumbai from 8 to 10 February. The visit aims to promote commercial and economic opportunities between Finland and India. In Mumbai, Minister Skinnari will inaugurate Finland’s new Consulate General. Parts of his programme will be a collaboration with Norway’s Minister of Trade and Industry.

8.12.2021 | In a report commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, likely future outlooks for regional development in Finland have been examined through four different scenarios. According to these scenarios which extend to 2040, regional development may be globally selective, concentrated on raw materials and tourism, patchwork-like or balanced.

1.12.2022 | The EU competitiveness ministers will convene for the last Competitiveness Council meeting of the year in early December. At the internal market and industry meeting, the ministers aim to reach a general approach on corporate sustainability due diligence and the Chips Act. Meanwhile, the research and innovation meeting is expected to adopt conclusions on a new European innovation programme.

17.11.2022 | More than half of Russians still have a positive attitude towards Finland, according to a country image survey carried out by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. However, the proportion of Russians who are positive towards Finland has dropped compared to previous years. Finland and Finnishness are associated with nature, quality and a high standard of living. The best-known Finns in Russia are Ville Haapasalo, Mika Häkkinen and Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim.

15.6.2023 | Finland’s economic growth is stagnant as rising prices and interest rates reduce demand.
